Anything can happen with Chins, but I think that she is going to become disillusioned with Syria faster than she became disillusioned with Cornwall and leave of her own accord before anything "happens" to her. But it won't be because of the instability of the region, the poverty, or the lack of running water. Primarily, it will be because of the lack of fast food and AC. We were all surprised that she stayed in Kuwait for as long as she did, but it was because all she really cares about are those two things. And her trips to Canada during that time were primarily to get particular fast food that she was "craving" and couldn't get in Kuwait. Secondarily, she's going to have to work around the electricity being available to charge her phone and use her CPAP.

My government's site completely discourages any type of travel to Sirya.

Are you a journalist who wants to go there with noble, humanitarian intentions? Hell naw. Stay away.
And if you're dumb enough to travel there anyways, they literally tell us to register, download an app and keep the location tracking on at all times so they know were locals can collect your corpse.
Plus, traveling within the country must be avoided at all costs, aka hide in a spot and pray you won't get unwanted attention.

Cyprus is a short boat ride from Syria and Syrians have been emerging from the seas there en masse.

Chantal could fly in, the visa laws are pretty easy for a “pink slip” which is an extended tourist visa for a year with easy an extension process if the applicant can prove they make at least €2000 a month from outside of the country. If they are actually married then I believe it’s just a bit extra she needs to bring in.

In Cyprus you pay an immigration agent to speed run the process and talk to their “friends & family” in the immigration department to get the paperwork without issue.

To be fair, there are all kinds of “solar generator” portable lithium power bank devices on the market these days, pretty affordable and easy to use. Charge up when the power is on, and/or from solar panels, then use the ac outlet or preferably the USBs for everything essential when the power is off.

She’s have enough for fan, fridge and internet, charging phone, and cpap at night. What more do you need (air conditioning).
