TBF I do think think live service stuff slipped in silently into the industry over time, boiling the frog sort of approach. I remember games such as the aforementioned "the crew" came out when Microsoft was pushing the whole "cloud computing" shit where stuff would be held server side people brought up how it would be shit if the internet gets shut down. Simscity 2013 was also a victim of this as well, but a lot of other games (mostly multiplayer ones because they found out how to charge out the ass for cosmetics) tried to do it subtler in games where an online connection as normal to find matches and all that. add onto that fact the boom in gaming during covid and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of younger gamers are conditioned to this sort of thing.
For anything you could say about Critikal and his slop videos, he really values humility and he's kind to a foolish degree.
