Is there even a lock on the master bedroom door? If so, I'm sure it's only from the inside, meaning that when the adults are not around (say, in a hot tub), it was open. That's a good point about the bedroom being too small.
Then there's the safe. It seems the main safe that contained the drugs was located in the master bath - this is the one the cops took outside to pry open and then returned to the guest bathroom to go through all the contents. But, again, bathrooms seldom lock from the outside.
In short, any precocious kid could have wandered into that bedroom or master bath to find the drugs when the adults were away. Nick is a disorganized slob. There's no way he always locked it all away.
Spare a thought and a prayer for the Slettas.
They have a lot of community support. With a little digging, you can uncover dozens and dozens of pics of Matt Christensen (newly minted Head Pastor, then Youth Pastor) and Pastor Melin with the Rekieta boys. That gives me some solace.I think the small MN semi rual town, has the kids plugged into other social system of support.
I'm a little confused about why, after 6 months in the care of the Slettas (plenty of time to "deprogram"), a Rekieta kid or two didn't go rogue.
Thankfully, the Rekieta kids are not all that isolated. They're about as "networked" as homeschooled kids can be. From what I can tell, the younger ones still attend the school co-op headed by Paula Holmen. (This is rather astonishing, actually. I imagine CPS insisted it was that, or public school. They knew Holmen would keep an eye on them.)
Anyway, there's a lot we don't know. Odds are that a kid or two are actively rebelling against their parents (ahem, choke-slam) and it will be kept private until someone in that family finally speaks up.
