I just noticed that she calls herself 'librarian of the Unseen University' here.

Sir Terry fans will know that the librarian of the Unseen University is an Orang Utan...
In the books, the wizards of Unseen University are mostly lazy, pretentious pseudo-intellectuals who spend their days eating, smoking, avoiding work, inventing titles for themselves and getting in pointless arguments.

I mention this for no particular reason.

Off topic, but can you change your username? I really, REALLY, hate mine after realizing it’s just a (quite stupid) drag name. I just like puns.

I’ll go back to my lurking lair now, but thanks to all of you everyday!

When I start my drag act, I'm going by "Big Beautiful Bill."

Can a Jewish kiwi please explain to me how one can be Jewish, a witch, trans, poly, and still somehow kosher and valid?

Does Judaism have any meaning AT ALL? Is Reform really just universalist Unitarianism with flare?

It’s so contradictory and pointless it hurts my brain
Funny you should ask! Becky wants to start a Discord to discuss exactly these kinds of topics!

I'm sure she'd love to have you join and engage in healthy debate in the grand tradition of Jewish people everywhere!

Except, Of course, she means she wants an asspat server, not a Jewish studies server.

She also does more adoption whining that I kinda half-heartedly agree with, although I come to a different conclusion. I agree we shouldn't change anyone's birth certificate, adopted or troon, and any amended bits should be like, addendums or something so you can track shit as they're intended to do.

I only think we should update birth certificates, but only because I've had a name change, and keeping track of your official name change document and the extra conversations aren't always worth it. While I don't agree with the tranny madness; I see it as the same or an extension of a name change. And you may think something as simple as a name change is easy enough to validate, I assure you, there are plenty of desk jockeys, for whatever reason, don't understand why the name on your Driver's License doesn't match the name on your Birth Certificate. It's easier to suffer through getting your birth certificate amended once, than doing the same shit over and over if you move, want a passport, etc.

Her "real name"? Mary Elizabeth Bellinger?

I might just start referring to her that way. Mary Elizabeth. Let's add it to the thread title, she says it's her real name!
I peripherally knew an adopted woman who was on a quest to find out what her *real* name had been. Spent good money trying to find out. Only to discover it had been "Destiny Rainbow" or something like that and her adopted parents truly did her a solid.

Honestly Rebecca Marie isn't that different than Mary Elizabeth in terms of ethnicity or culture. She wasn't deprived of some culturally significant piece of heritage and per usual should stfu.

I thought Yonah was her "real name". It's what she goes by and throws a fit if someone doesn't call her. Or are we saying whatever is originally put on your birth certificate is always your real name even if you voluntarily and legally change it? That's an interesting statement for a totally real trans person to make.

They're Polish, which Becky is not

Ditto Poland.
'Polish German woman' has been a recent addition, perhaps Becky was worrying about how beliveable this snippet was- but yea I was shocked to hear that my Polish friend, who is ten years older than me and so grew up in proper communism times, had more channels than we did in the decade after, mtv and all that shit, cos fuckloads of the poles had dodgy cable rigged up and stuff.
Off Topic, but this was common for ex-soviet countries (including Russia) because in more western countries the infrastructure was juuust good enough to jury-rig and add on for internet/digital TV etc.
In ex-soviet countries, the infrastructure was either too poor quality, or simply didn't exist. So instead of 'upgrades' that worked at capacity, they got brand new systems, built for modern usage with expansion built in.
Every soviet raised person I know had much much more exposure to things like MTV in the '90's than I did in NZ.

It helps if you know the historical roots of Reform as a movement. Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786) was on the road to becoming a rabbi but turned left and became a philosopher and "intellectual" instead. He led a movement called the Haskalah also known as "the Jewish Enlightenment." This movement pushed for total cultural and religious integration with the society of the elite German intellectuals it rubbed elbows with. To the extent that German Reform synagogues built during the 19th century were outfitted with pipe organs and choir lofts. They gathered for worship on Sunday, instead of Saturday, to fit in with their Lutheran neighbors.

Now the days of mainline Protestants having cultural sway are long gone. It makes sense and is entirely in the true and honest spirit of Reform Judaism to integrate with the values of today's liberal elite- neopaganism, polyamory, homosexuality, and all that.

Pretty much. They have no standards for anything. Conservative is going the same way.

You’re giving them too much credit by tracing contemporary reformim back to even the 19th century. At least those leaders were highly educated in Jewish and secular thought. Today they’re totally ignorant and divorced from any Jewish theology or culture.

Thanks for reminding me of an article I read ages ago about kids not getting adopted because they had names like "Chardonnay" and "Heavenly Sparkle". I think there's a huge difference between "we didn't like the name Mary" and saving a child from any potential issues that might come from having a trashy name. Bullying, self esteem issues, not getting hired because nobody will take them seriously. Ethnic names it depends, if it's a nightmare to pronounce in whatever language the kid is going to be speaking mostly then yeah, change it.

But what did Becky find out her specific ethnic background is again? I remember her saying something along the lines of English, Swedish, Hungarian, some sort of Slavic, though I'm pretty sure her birth family were at least several generations American so she wouldn't have learned jack about any of her ancestral cultures anyway, maybe just a watered down Americanised version. I get that for adoptees it can suck growing up feeling like something is missing but I don't think Becky was missing out on much.

Dad is Albanian. And while I don't think he was fresh off the boat, his name was recognizably so, and definitely not assimilated. But it doesn't sound like he was sticking around regardless.

definitely not assimilated.
I remember her saying he was a very conservative drumpf supporter and having a whole dramatic arc about whether to meet and associate with him because of it. If he was more anti-assimilation Becky would be so far up his ass for the culture points.

We get it, you hate Reform Jews.
