I liked my friends wifes response to me asking if she liked it.

"I think I'm sick of James Gunns schtick"
what is his schtick to most people? for me i think its the retro soundtrack, and the goyslop tier emotional moments, like the silly bullshit with the dog. GOTG would have these incredibly forced emotional moments and go full tearjerker during them. its fucking annoying how blantant it is, literally Oprah tier. every episode of Creature Commandos had a tragic backstory that was supposed to make you feel something.

If you remember the show "This is Us" it was a 2010s melodramatic tv show that did the same "plots designed to make you cry" thing only Gunn wraps it up in whats supposed to be a comedy film and thats why i find it more annoying.

i have a hard time saying there's a difference between his snark and whedons, but maybe the best way to say it is that Gunn's just feels more out of place, its very flippant to me

Alongside the blatant character assassination it also just feels like its trying to rip off Invincible?

Like I know other series have done what Invincible did but it did feel like that with the whole "take over the planet and breed to take over."
I think the most direct source is probably Brightburn, since IIRC it’s pretty much the same plot points, and Gunn’s brother wrote it.
But there are a ton of different things that do the same idea. In addition to the ones already mentioned, the pretty obvious one is Sayains and Goku’s origin before they retconned stuff regarding Bardock.

At this point there are probably more “kryptonains but evil” than not. It’s a trite, overplayed concept and it was really dumb of Gunn to do it.

So I was correct and it's fine?
"Fine" would be my word for it. My biggest gripe was that the action is pretty shit compared to Znyder's. For better or worse, Gunn apparently tried to make the movie that people have been saying they want, and evidently managed to do it without having to reshoot 50% of it after test screenings. MCU can't even do fanservice-y crowd-pleasing slop anymore, so maybe they should've held onto him.

Why not just use the Phantom Zone? Isn't that basically what it is?
Well, that would come with a lot of baggage. It could've just been an evil underground lair lined with lead or something. Personally I liked that they went full retard with it, establishing Lex can just do stuff like that, it's that kind of a universe.

Lobo was the Deadpool of the 90s. Deadpool was around in the 90s, but nobody gave a shit until the 2000s
1980s Marvel UK's Death's Head was Lobo before his makeover and Deadpool* also before his makeover.

Rob Liefield's Deadpool was a professional merc/bounty hunter who occasionally does snarky comments and one-liners. Basically Death's Head shtick but without the murder, death, kill mode if someone is suicidally stupid to call him a bounty hunter instead of his preferred job title of "Freelance Peace Keeping Agent."

Is only sentient being to make enemies with the Transformers, the Fantastic Four, the Doctor, Arno Stark, and many more, yes?

For me, it's Gunn not taking big threats seriously. In Guardians 1, Ronan gets the Power Stone and is about to lay waste to Xander only to get distracted by Star-Lord acting like a goof. In Gunn's Suicide Squad, Starro gets released, begins destroying buildings, and some rando at Waller's base yells out with excitement, "We got a kaiju!"

So apparently, in the 1st movie of this new universe, we already have Lex being able to manufacture superheroes and even create universes.
I guess multiverse tech is just like Uber Eats now: everyone’s got it, no setup needed.

Isn't that the kind of thing that should come much much later and not all at once?
It feels less like a movie and more like Gunn got called into a meeting and told this was his one shot, so he crammed four films’ worth of plot into one. Every character walks on screen like it’s their last appearance before Warner sells them to Tencent.

Imo Death's Head is the best iteration of this archetype and it's a shame he'll never be in a movie because he's so inseparably tied to a rival studio's film franchise (although I was hoping he would pop up in Doctor Who when the Disney deal was still a thing).

She turned her hands into buzz saws. I will always, ALWAYS mark out for hands turning into buzz saws. It's the 80s in me, I guess.
It was so funny how they have her go full deli slicer on Superman robots, and meanwhile Luthor is strolling through flaming debris flying past his face like he’s in the Blue Man Group, just totally dead-eyed.

I think it’s supposed to show he’s cold blooded, but it just comes off like Hoult didn’t want to pretend he wasn’t in front of a green screen.

There are a few moments like that and they sting every time. The worst for me was the staff of the Daily Planet in Mr. Terrific's spaceship just dead-eyed staring while Lois does some ZaNy QuIrKy (TM) shit while Steve is over-emoting in the background and everyone else is just, "Welp. We're getting paid for staring at an X on a wall."

I didn't think about it but yeah, it is an Invincible rip off...

On the whole, while I find it deeply flawed, I didn't hate it. I also don't feel personally attacked like I have after watching every other comic book movie made in the last 5-10 years. I hope it does okay, because it could be a good first step. Thank you for reading my essay-length college thesis of a fucking comic book movie.
I'm a little younger than you but mostly similar fan. The only difference I had with your opinions was that I was mostly fine with Krypto. I think your idea of Jon and Martha straightening him out was great, just for a sequel.

I've never seen a movie with so many reviewers who can't seem to make up their minds. So many are saying it's both good and bad, it's great and awful, etc. After the Rotten Tomatoes score dropped, the YouTube reviewers seem to be hedging their verdict. Nothing I've heard, though, really gets me excited to go see the movie.
Totally see why people are split down the middle on this. There's a lot it gets right and fair amount it fumbles, but I think overall it's good. It's not ok and it's not terrible. It's good. I kinda like how Gunn didn't necessary play it safe and took it in a different direction. Now there's a fair amount I didn't care for, but they got enough right for it to work overall. It's better then an average marvel movie these days.

I think the beginning was a bit rough, it cold opens with supes getting his ass kicked and it takes a little while for him to find his groove. I hated the actors for his Krypton parents. The kents were kinda awkward at first. The lois interview is really long, and I liked it, but Superman hasn't really kicked any ass before it so, it's awkward pacing wise.

I prefer cavil but the new guy does a decent job, and I do dig how he chooses diplomacy as a first resort. My boomer father who's a big old school superman fan liked him and overall thought the movie was good. He'd didn't care much for the other superheros stealing screentime but he did like Mr terrific. Lex was very manic, but his performance was good. It helps if you view it as a lex Luthor that's been doing this for years and is extremely frustrated and gratified to finally have Superman on edge.

Mr terrific was great. I wasn't sure he was gonna be able to sell the costume, but he pulled it off and he's basically Superman's buddy cop in this. They did a great job with him and I'd totally watch a film with him leading. Also was pleasantly surprised with metamorpho. Made me want to look him up, as he gave a good performance.

Was Engineer worth a fuck in this movie?
I don't really know the character but she had cool powers and used them well.

That didn't really bother me, although it was annoying how they kept mentioning Superman's alleged harem, like it's the funniest shit in the world.
It drove me up the wall just because of how Stupid it was.

"My son you can bring them hope.........BY TAKING OVER THE PLANET AND BREEDING THE SHIT OUT OF THE WOMENS!" *AIR HORNS*

Why is it that in the past 2 Supermen movies they had to spiritually rape one of his sets of parents?

Also fuck the dog, worst part of the movie. How is it that you made the Diversity Squad more tolerable than the non talking animal.
Also every scene with Lex is borderline unwatchable.

So we're going to bear witness to Gunn's DC Universe
I don't think so, I think Supergirl is going to fucking suck.
