The short version of it is Melton saw Steel Toe was having a feud with another comedian, Chad Zumock. Melton knew Chad from doing a show years before and sharing a hotel for a few days, but they weren't friends or anything and didn't interact since but he wanted to get involved anyways. At first Melton was on Steel Toe's side and thought him and April had a "good show", but after covering them a few episodes he flipped and started to stream snipe his morning shows which led the Steel Toe a-logs who were just forming their subreddit to watch him and gave him 10x the views his other videos were getting (still only a couple thousand, but his videos before about Donkeylips and no name Vegas open mic'ers would barely hit 100, some single digits). That's pretty much it, Dabbleverse retards started throwing money at him and he's been milking them and getting more obsessed ever since.

edit to add a little more of a personal theory: Melton also has major insecurities after being Redbar's personal lolcow for years and being his "fool" was the major reason Melton's views were so shit despite being one of the first comedians to get involved with podcasting and working with a lot of major comics.
