Celebrity is a hell of a drug, even if it's infamous. These people have never had anything worthwhile happen to them, and more to the point these people have never MADE anything worthwhile happen. They're LARPing their whole lives, looking for something to give them some meaning. They've projected their injustices and redemption and revenge-of-the-little-guy arcs onto him. It's absolutely a voluntary loss on their part, and worth that derision.
