Stop thinking. This is not a movie for thinking. I don't even really mean that as a harsh criticism; lots of movies aren't made for thinking, and at the end of the day Gunn seems to know that -- the tone of the movie is generally frolicsome. It does, however, make the drooling from Bob and guys like Walter Chaw and the other clapping seals @Positron highlighted look incredibly stupid. They see what they want to see and are suitably impressed by their own insight. Sad!
This also indicates Bob is far from alone in his long-ingrained pavlovian behavior towards movies that give him Dopamine Hits, from Baysplosions, titties, monkies (see: King Kong, and anything with Donkey Kong in it), or anything super hyper current-day-issue political that would upsetty spaghetti the MAGAnaiseghoulen barrow wight trash. Especially Walter Chaw (who the fuck is that guy anyway).

I was curious so I found this on a reddit r/blankies (Blank Check - apparently this is a podcast) archived post, the twitter post it referred to is deleted because when Chaw made the move to BSky, he fucking deleted his whole-ass twitter account, making it free for :epik: to make their own using his name lol:

1752518774309.webp
Holy shit no wonder he's besties with Bob. When two people hate the same things, it creates a bond. Hate can move mountains. [/A Million Ways To Die In The West] I got a glimpse of the twitter partial (because of the archive) and it was Chaw saying how he felt marginalized as an Azn person all his life. Where the fuck did he live, the Midwest?! Boston?
Here's some more Chaw-related context, and we even find some people talking about Ted Lasso. I remember some of Bob's senpais recommended that show to him.
This one's quoting Chaw's tweet (the italics):1752519100692.webp
I'm thinking by this point Chaw needs his own thread.
EEAAO = Everything Everywhere All At Once (which Bob sperged to high heaven about how cool it was):
1752519193853.webp
BTW Walter's review of SuperGunn provides some more clues:
https://filmfreakcentral.net/2025/07/superman-2025/ (full version)

This motherfucker grew up in Small Town Colorado and Engrish wasn't his first language, indicating at least his parents were FOB if not the whole fam damily. Apparently he got bullied for being a chink, which is bad, and turned him into what he is today, which is basically Azn Moviebob. Bullying makes people more likely to turn to the Marxian-Postmodernist Critical Race Theory nonsense to make sense of their lot in life. Also the people who were bullying him were probably raised by Cluster B Clusterfucks, well on the way to being Cluster B Clusterfucks themselves, which explains the confusion Walter felt about the hypocrisy that narcissist cluster B clusterfucks bring to religion. Which causes Chaw to believe that Superman is HIS "Jesus". He's so confused he thinks Santa Claus has been "given" the same power as the Christian God. No wonder this guy's a mess psychologically, but that doesn't excuse his Moviebob-clone behavior.

1752520773648.webp
I had to be stupid-quick to catch that, because in a few seconds it vanishes. Reloading the page and being lightning-quick on the screencap finally paid off, since the twitter page is long-gone.

Sean really nails a lot of my feelings.

Gene Hackman's Luthor was definitely a mustache twirling villain, but he has so much fun with the part that I can't help but enjoy the performance. It could be nostalgia talking -- I'm the perfect age for my earliest Superman memories to be a mix of Christopher Reeve and the SuperFriends -- but I'll always love that take on the character. "It's open, come in" still puts a smile on my face.
Oh I love Hackman's performance. But my point was that it was hardly subtle or nuanced. (I kind of enjoy him even more in Superman 2.)

I don't remember much about Spacey's Luthor other than being disappointed, and while I'm sure Jesse Eisenberg is a catalog of horrors I haven't actually seen Man of Steel. (I know you're not on the whole SnyderBro vs. Gunntard thing, but there are a whole lot of people online who seem not to realize it's possible to dislike this movie while having only seen a handful of Zack Snyder movies, none of them starring Superman. Bob demonstrates this retardation admirably, but he's far from alone.)
Oh I have. Part of me will always be a little bitter at Synder for ruining "ramping" which I had hopes at the time it was starting to spread would revolutionize action sequences. (there was a great demonstration of this in the closing scene of Angel episode 3x19) Then Synder went and over did it in 300 rendering it a joke such that nobody has really used it since.

So I'm just saying I have some issues with Synder on many levels. (though his movies are slightly better when they don't chop them to hell)

But if you want a taste of Jesse Luthor:

You perfectly clarified for me why the Hulk/Loki scene worked while Krypto/Luthor made me roll my eyes. Superhero fatigue might be a very real thing, or at least the quippy take on superheroes might be, because these takes aren't just getting old; their writers are forgetting how to make them work.
This is what bugs me when I hear people say "Joss Whedon ruined ___." It's like saying Tolkien ruined fantasy. Those guys didn't ruin anything, their imitators did! And yes, like you said, when they put people in charge of these things who just "cargo cult" the writing instead of understanding how it works, damn right it starts falling apart.

Though I could very much see executive hands in this as well. "We need more jokes now!"
"But sir, this scene is about a man's dying wife."
"Last movie that did well had jokes by now. Do more jokes!"

(the franchise played this up to absolutely gut-busting moment)

Saiyans are not in my idiom, alas.

"Giving the supporting cast something to do" is a telltale symptom of script problems. I think the issue is more acute -- in 2025, a mega newspaper like The Daily Planet should be hemorrhaging readers and money, not something the public is going to rely on for their news consumption. Hell, Superman IV more accurately depicted this with the Planet getting bought out by a sleazy tabloid, and that was almost forty years ago! If Gunn wanted a traditional depiction of the Planet, he needed to either make this a period piece or set it in some fantasy no-time like they did with the Nero Wolfe tv show. Superman is essentially a modern fable, so it would have worked.

Also, if you don't want to remind people of what dire straits newspapers find themselves in these days, you probably shouldn't cast an alumnus of The Wire and then completely waste him.
Spider-man kind of has the same problem. Both of the red and blue heroes have some great supporting casts which work amazing when you have long-form storytelling like a monthly comic book (or 4 times a month comic books as both Supes and Spidey have had in the past) but start stressing the story when you have an under 2 hour movie in play.

But you know - work for the paper is a big core of their identity. And having a movie without that cast even appearing...

It's just kind of the nature of the square peg and round hole of the mediums. I actually thought Gunn was trying to set it in a fantasy neo-time (like the OG batman animated series).

These people think that a theocracy is when leaders use religion as a moral compass instead of what the Vatican and Iran do. If anything, Iran is an excellent example of why it doesn't work out on a larger scale.

Didn't watch the full video, but I'm not surprised he's getting ready to put aside his love for the MCU in order to throw his full devotion behind Gunn's new DC Universe. He can finally accept that the MCU has faltered because now he has another limb to grab onto after half a decade of denying the great Kevin Feige could ever do wrong. Obviously he hasn't made the full leap just yet, but after Fantastic 4, I expect to see some negativity thrown Marvel's way to prop up DC.
Ok so we all know Bob LOVES James Gunn because Gunn was one of the first major interviews Bob had with his "career" and Gunn is actually living the hollywood life that Bob always envisioned for himself.

But I think there's another angle I haven't realized until I was watching the RLM review of Superman.

Mike & the boys point out that James Gunn is best at writing the asshole characters and really seems to gravitate towards them. Which is... very true. And when you watch those characters and listen to Gunn talk, it becomes clear that the reason he gravitates towards them is that Gunn himself is an asshole, but he wants to believe he's an asshole with a heart of gold. "Yeah, I may not be the kindest or nicest, but I'm still a good person deep down." is pretty much how Gunn views himself and how he writes his favorite characters.

Which is why Bob gravitates so hard to Gunn because that is exactly how Bobby sees himself. This is why we see him go on about how he knows he's unliked on the social media sites, but stuff like Gunn's movies gives him some comfort that "he's still a good person deep down."

The only series I watched this year and man I was crushed when the news broke it was cancelled already. It's a superb series that does satire right where none of the characters are too unlikeable.

And the scene in question, they really knew how to put in Chinese tractors in a movie that takes place 95% in outer space (I'll admit it, my sides were in orbit when they showed chinese Tractors in a space hangar as an option).

The chinese tractors alone make the whole series worth it.

Then when they put them in the hospital room because he had to have that scene...

yeah, Gunn mirrors Bob, or Bob mirrors Gunn, he saw that when he did the interview, and it's like kindred spirits or some shit. Narcissistic mirroring is very common. Autists do it too, but for different reasons - they must copy that which does not come naturally when it comes to social conventions. Narcissists already know social conventions, unless they're fairly autistic themselves.
I thought lived experiences were supposed to be important.

strange indeed is the Suicide Cult that generally frowns upon seppuku. If Conservatism was a suicide cult, it would be FOR MAID, suicide, abortion, etc, not against it.

I don't think he's ever talked about BBC Sherlock or House in great detail, he's mentioned them but not in depth enough to show that he was able to actually sit through a whole episode (One post from earlier this year made it clear he only knows House from pop culture osmosis, which he thinks makes him an expert the same way he's an expert on COD and Mass Effect) but they are absolutely who he sees himself as. Or at least, who he wishes he could be. These unrepentant asshole geniuses who can freely insult and belittle everyone around them, but are too important to get rid of.

I think I said on Linkara's thread that Lewis is a coward who wishes he was a hero, while Bob is a coward who wishes he was a villain. But, as you pointed out, he doesn't understand that his heart is not gold. It's black and shriveled.

Bob's a retard with blue curtain analysis as usual. It's so bad, he's reading the blue curtains on why Westerns got (and stayed) popular! If Bob isn't/wasn't a big fan of westerns, of course he's not going to understand. It's adventure, but probably doesn't have enough dopamine hits to interest Bob that much. Shit was written well-enough I guess for people to tolerate it and come back for more, which is more than I can say for any Tumblrina-produced modern Steven Universe-y slop. People want to see the good guys triumph over the bad guys. A lot of Westerns featured an underdog-ish hero winning against almost impossible odds. No Superpowers, just the power of Colt/Smith & Wesson/Remington. Plus the "Singing Cowboy" stuff got played on radio and TV, with such acts as Gene Autry (the OG Singing Cowboy himself) and Roy Rogers. That music was all over the place back then. Cowboys and Injuns movies were an escape, sorta like Capeshit is *supposed to be*. Not a bunch of Current-Day Bullshit Un-Allegoried Political messages. Just a proper Hero's Journey story, which is pretty much a universal thing.

Bob's a retard for even asking how a genre of media got popular despite the fans of it being so-far-removed from it historically. That's like asking why people like High Fantasy or Science Fiction. Nobody ever fucking lived through King Arthur or Star Trek. Saying 9/11 caused a sudden uptick in the interest of Superhero movies is a dogshit take at best. That would be like saying WW II caused a resurgent interest in Westerns.

Good call. It's just a bunch of Bob's meandering word salad whereupon he expresses bewilderment that the Western genre of Movies lasted as long as it did, given that Real Life Western Cowboys & Indians life was but a small snapshot of American History that the Boomers and their parents did not live through. Yet in the same fucking breath he's arguing that 9/11 made Capeshit more appealing. That's every bit as Blue Curtain Exceptional as it sounds.

I forced myself to watch the entire goddamn thing and boy oh boy do I regret it. Bob will never use ten words when he can use fifty, and somehow he manages to say so very, very little. Brevity is the soul of wit, Bob. It doesn't help that you know he got all this stuff from comic book wikis and is by no means a fan himself, able to reel off the delineations of comic book eras without looking them up.

I don't think "9/11 led to superhero movies" is a thought unique to him, and to be fair in the superhero films pre 2012 or so you can see a lot of the national mood at the time reflected in them -- Iron Man taking on not-the-Taliban; urban terrorism in all the Nolan Batman movies (let's not forget Bob's feuds on old movie sites regarding Batman as a GWB figure); the horror of a teleporting mutant infiltrating the White House in the second X-Men movie ... but it's also very much the fact that CGI became so pervasive and made superhero movies look better. Compare the amount of effort that went into making Christopher Reeve fly in 1978 to how easy it is to portray the entire slate of the X-Men or Avengers 25-40 years later.

His take on the Western is far stupider. It lingers in culture because it's American mythology. He handwaves expanding the era of the Western to the early frontier or the early 20th century, but the fact of the matter is the genre doesn't exist without those outliers -- there were bloody Western conflicts over a decade before the Civil War, and Wyatt Earp died so far into the 20th century that several early Western actors served as pallbearers at his funeral. It's the frontier spirit, combined with the unique visual appeal of America west of the Rockies. He dismisses the setting as something that was done because it was so close to L.A., but the fact is if you hail from anywhere in the eastern regions of the US (which was most of the country pre-California's population boom) then that landscape is both totally alien and totally enchanting. John Ford knew that -- anytime he goes to Monument Valley it'll take your breath away. But even more than its strangeness, the West is unconquered territory, something that stirs any American worth the name.

Bob sees things only in terms of cultural dominance and financial success. His vision is soulless and grubby, because Bob is soulless and grubby. I spit on the people who made me watch this video.

Well, no, I did that to myself. But I was reminded, yet again, why I find this guy such a loathsome toad.

Maxine Waters, like Moviebob, is long overdue for a straitjacket and a padded cell.

I don't know where that "blue states pay for red states" jazz comes from, but I firmly stand by the opinion that the red states survive without the blue, but the blue states are dead without the red.
