Drug availability is very low in Syria right now. As of May, public health data indicated that what was available was 1) drugs produced in Syria's remaining actual pharmaceutical industry (which was reduced by 90% due to the conflicts), 2) drugs imported through Turkey and Iraq, 3) unregulated "tourist medicines" that enter through informal suppliers (smuggling), and 4) locally produced medicines from unregulated pharmaceutical producers.

Chantal is on Cipralex, which is another brand name for Lexapro. Cipralex is actually manufactured in Canada but it's widely available in other places e.g. Turkey over the counter and extremely cheaply. The chance they found it as an import from a neighboring country is pretty good. (I doubt anyone in the tattered remnants of Syria's drug industry is bothering to make escitalopram when they barely have access to insulin, antihypertensives, etc). And while Salah isn't morally above drugging her, I sincerely doubt he's smart enough to understand the difference between SSRIs and other drugs. If she seems slow it might be from her uncontrolled blood sugar, shisha, or even alcohol.

And let's not forget Chantal knows better than her doctors. Like all her other meds, she is noncompliant with her SSRIs and thinks she can take them PRN (as needed - like you would with a benzo when you felt especially bad). She just pops one from time to time and doesn't understand SSRIs take time and consistency to have a chance at efficacy. So they haven't been doing anything for her lo these many years and buying Cipralex was just throwing money in the pit toilet.
