I think he just doesn't understand that traditional media success means needing to get along with others so that they'd want to work with you or that a rising tide lifts all boats. Like if you don't make it pleasant, reasonable, and profitable to work with you, then you don't get people wanting to work with you who are also good at those things.

So he ends up imagining that so long as you have the popularity, the success will follow. Resulting in a more amateurish production setup that would scare off anyone wanting a job that provides stability (or health insurance).

He spent half a decade as an outsider, and the second he achieved large scale success he immediately got treated as a 'thought leader'. He can't handle not being in charge of a situation that is being broadcasted. Fishtank has clearly convinced him that he is supposed to be a force of nature that can't ever be challenged. Comedy as a performance is hard I imagine. I wouldn't of flipped the desk, but the alternative is to literally play Harland's monkey. Just trying to figure out was that malicious or just his style of podcast. I saw him do some similar stuff to other guests by getting them to do bits but the Sam stuff could be seen as Harland legitimately attempting to humiliate Sam.

Watch the entire thing. Sam brought up rape and Harland tried to get out of it in a really obvious way that made it clear he wanted to avoid the topic. Sam brought up rape out of nowhere a second time minutes later so Harland just gives up and makes fun of him. Sam was very happy to start talking about rape multiple times but I guess the old man was too mean.

Yea, for me the desk part is the least of it. It was a bit of a poor sport and not playing along but I would assume either everything was fine or if there was damages Sam would've compensated Harland. The whole reason I've been obsessed with this for like 2 days is the look on Harland's face as they wrestle. If this ended up being a bit I would eat my fucking dick because they are both amazing actors in that case. Harland gritting a smile through his teeth. That's the moment I hit maximum cringe as it feels like Sam was intending to flip the desk and call it the nest and then put Harland in the nest as a role-reversal. And Harland was gritting his teeth like "ok flipping the desk is fucked up but this is amazing footage, but I'm not letting this fucker manhandle me". Sam realizes he can't move him as easily as he wants and deflects with a comment about his strength and age.

I wouldn't say this was a "career killer", but it does feel like a squandered opportunity. Someone connected in the L.A. comedy scene and the movie industry isn't a bad person to befriend.

I think it wasn't a big deal until he chimped out and flipped the desk. It wasn't some prop desk. There where expensive mics, video switchers, camera controllers, mixer etc built in to the desk. A few grand of equipment hit the floor there. Then to make it worse he physically starts pushing a 62 year old man around the room. He completely killed any hopes of getting on any more large shows. Pointless self sabotage.

Harland pinpointed all of Sam's projection and insecurity and unleashed it on him, all while keeping it funny. And it was amazing. Cutting him off to have his henchman speak instead, talking about rape, being raped, priests raping. Calling him a big stupid gorilla because he's clearly on T, disregarding all his talking points, ignoring his plugs and stories. Putting Sam in the uncomfortable position between submitting or flaring up, and he chose to flare up and lost his cool. He tried to play it off as a joke but his crew clearly knew he was pissed. This shit was genius in its execution. He either did his research OR he is insane at reading people. Harland is perfectly executing what Idubbz imagined he would do to crack Sam.

I never really liked Harland's type of comedy. I am not a fan of his. But this really was a "Pro's vs Joe's" situation. Where even the most mid-tier Professional NFL player on the worst team, can lay the local hero the fuck out. 10 mins reading Harland's wiki or IMDB and you can see this dude is a Pro. Outside of his movie and TV work he has been working the roast and impov circuit for years. That type of comedy isn't just spitting out bits. Its a mental boxing match where you have to be quick witted and at the same time get your jokes to land. If Sam just did a little bit of research by watching his live shows on youtube he would have seen there was no way he was going to shake this guy with his normal personal space gimmicks. He should have gone in thinking of ways to keep up with him on a back and forth. How to put on a good show and show off his comidy crew. Use it as a stepping stone to the next level.

To be fair, Norm Macdonald was only ever in shit parts for shit movies, but he was brilliant at both standup and liveshows. Lots of comedy guys aren't made for movies and aren't really aiming for them anyways.

Talking about Sam on Matans show.
