Hawkman in the JL cartoon was a guy with clip-on wings.
Yes, but Hawk
man was a LARPing human who believed he was the reincarnation of an ancient Thanagarian and dresses up as one. There's a scene in JL in which Shiara who thinks she's found a nice normal man is confronted with him suddenly strapping on fake wings and a home-made helmet. It'd be the equivalent of a White Western man romancing a beautiful Black woman and then on the fifth date slathering boot polish on your face and telling her "My real name is Ayomide Abayomi" in a dodgy Nigerian accent. He's lucky she only had hysterics.
I think it's better that way. Organic wings raise a lot of questions about how characters manage to wear shirts or travel on public transportation.
They're usually depicted as wearing breast plates held on with straps.
and Shiara goes for backless dresses:
Hawkgirl having wings that come or go is weird. Didn't think about it until afterwards.
Also, iirc Lex Luthor says that Superman is the only metahuman who is an alien, which means Hawgirl isn't a Thanagarian in this, maybe.
That's a good point. But that is also a little weird. They have a Green Lantern of all people. This one is human but the presence of the lantern corp inherently brings in a lot of extra-terrestrial interaction. Is his version of Green Lantern a terrestrial one then? Or is Lex just being very legalistic when he speaks and means Superman is the only legally resident or long-term alien on Earth?
Lex keeps referring to Superman as being "Martian" or "Venusian" in off-hand remarks. Does suggest there's not much alien interaction though if everything is lumped into "Earth and non-Earth". It's a good point - so now we have a non-Thanagarian hawk girl?
I still think it's impossible to make Hawkgirl boring. I need more Hawkgirl.
Hawkgirl needs more Hawkgirl. Specifically around 11" of her. Actress is tiny and round.
Yeah, well, look at Superman '25. "At least it's not Snyder" will be its epitaph. Imagine if those movies never existed and we were stuck arguing about whether it's worse than Superman Returns
Superman Returns is probably the one Superman movie the Gunn version
is better than. I think the Snyder movies will age better than people think. They're good movies, their problem is they're what not many people want (very serious, very unironic, long and did I mention very serious?). But on the other hand both the MCU films and other Gunn are very of their time - the quips, the references, the zaniness. They'll look like
Herbie Goes Bananas to later generations with their heavy-handed humour and zappy-effiects. The effects in Snyder strive for realism which will age better as will seriousness and more mythic tone.
For all that Batman vs. Superman gets slated, I think this is a great sequence:
It's human, you see the destruction and fear or ordinary people, it ends with the viewer seeing Bruce's anger at this alien that brought its own conflict to his world killing people he knew and cared for. It sets up the conflict well and none of it depends on current era tastes because this sort of human drama is recurrent in all generations.
I don't expect to win an argument on that here. I expect to be proven right twenty years from now.
