Feedback Technical Grievances

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
This is not related to the new update at all, but it is a persistent issue I have had both before and after the update.

Sometimes when I try to read on mobile (IOS safari), there are certain pages that do not load correctly. I will start reading, and I can read a few posts as everything is loading, then once everything is loaded I get an error and can't see the thread anymore. Refresh and the same thing happens. Go to the rest of the forum and it works fine. Go back to that page I tried to load, it "crashes" again. Again I can scroll and read posts, until the page fully loads then it gives an error. Only on mobile, I am on PC right now I will try to get whatever error code it gives next time it happens. I assume it has something to do with certain attachments

I have been noticing when either posting or editing a post, I have to save and refresh the page in order for the post reply button to work. If not, after hitting the button, I get the usual activity of the site telling me it's processing it, but then it just shits the bed and does nothing. After a refresh, the button works. Has happened in the USPG2 thread and on this post here.
Same here. Windows 10, Firefox 140, NordVPN, no Tor. Can't remember the thread, sorry.

sorry for my sock sticker nigger behavior ...... I would like to think I have learned from my bad behavior and am not repeating it ...... I lost my pink sticker and feel naked ........ for some reason the dear feeder has shown grace on me .... so I ask Jersh moon to use his God powers to unban me from the comicsgate thread ...... I have autism to offer ....... thanks for accepting my prayer

Mobile experience is a bit different. Default font to read seems slightly smaller, and when I create a message the font/overall view expands to the point that the full width doesn't fit in the view. Have to pinch the screen to see the full window, but even after that, once I start typing it sometimes expands again and I have to hold and manually move the view left/right to see everything I've typed.

Also, if I've typed a long comment and want to insert a link or create a quoted section, I can't scroll up with my finger all the way to the tools at the top of the editing window. Previously, I could do that by putting a finger on the outer right edge of the screen, and moving it up to get me out of the typing/editing field to anything above that. Now, right side drag stays in the typing window. Left side drag sometimes allows me to move the whole thing and get to the tools - but often what happens even then is that the text I'd highlighted where I wanted to link un-highlights, so I have to try a few times.

Might be the rearrangement of tools?

...And fwiw I just tried to recreate it and it behaved a bit differently - I could move up past the top of the edit window better, so I think I figured out where my finger now needs to go, so fine. ...but it still has a smaller original font that gets sometimes/ most times hers larger once I start typing in the edit window and can't see full left-to-right when typing.

That is definitely your browser. I'm on brave right now. As always you provide no information so that's the answer you get. I have not changed the UI at all

That to me? I'm on same browser as ever (safari). Sorry - that should have been included - tried to be as clear as possible but clearly left out critical info, got it.

In any case, it's not a complaint or telling you FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT, just relating a change I noticed overnight a couple days ago. I'm adapting, just thought to provide info. And idk what has or hasn't been deliberately changed, but the emoji tool is now visible without having to tap the 3 dots on that part of the tool menu, and when I do tap that section's 3 dots, the sub-menu icons are further to the right. Again, not complaining, just info. If you didn't intend those changes, now you know. Do what you like with it.

Work mostly complete.

I dropped about $3,000 to get new hardware to increase my access to the servers so that we have to rely on remote hands less often which will decrease downtime in catastrophic events. I am upgrading our network to 10G from 1G. I intend to reduce the complexity of our topology so that the site has less latency with every request.

The most important change is that we have added an optimized NVMe SSD in RAID 10 on XFS for the database. The database is very large and when our previous NVMe raid failed I moved it to the SSD raid that is optimized for files. Thus, the attachments and database were competing for I/O, which is why both broke frequently. This new raid is a completely separate set of devices which means that not only is the database on very recent harddrives with a better connector (NVMe vs SATA), it is also no longer competing with the S3 file system that handles attachments. This will make both load faster.

It's 3am and I'm tired but this is only the first step towards optimizing things. I will do more work over the week.

This is brought to you by the GiveSendGo donors btw, thank you for helping me help you help us all.

Accurately Describe the Problem.
Describe when you first and last encountered the issue.

- Desktop/Mobile
- Browser
- VPN? Tor? Clearnet?
Have you considered a ZFS array instead of XFS? You would be able to tune the block size of the dataset for the database essentially on the fly, and also gain peace of mind knowing that your database wont be falling over from silent corruption. As a hardware geek, would you mind sharing some more specs on the server?

I am having zero hangups since my http2 tuning and unless someone else is still experiencing them I am going to consider the issue resolved and start adding back complexity to our setup.

I do not like doing fun or experimental things with the disks. I have obliterated more disks than anyone else alive. I don't like touching them. I don't do it unless I have to. I do not consider playing with exciting new filesystems a fun prospect.

A couple of times now, when trying to open the site, Kiwiflare turns out like this:

Refreshing the page does nothing (Note: I haven't tried ctrl + F5 for a full refresh so I'll try that if I get it again) and disabling uBlock Origin and Violentmonkey (The only extensions I have enabled for this website that would directly affect it) does change anything. Only other one I have is uMatrix but I have that disabled by default. I also can't think of any settings in about:config that would affect Kiwiflare since it has worked flawlessly in the past. I also checked the console to see if it had anything but it doesn't look like it to me (And I also barely understand it so that doesn't help):

This usually happens when starting up the my browser (Librewolf) for the first time after a complete shutdown of my PC. After that, it rarely or never happens again.

Also a useful detail, the first time I encountered this was after I took a break from the Farms for a day, meaning I didn't access the site at all for that day. That's also when the upgrades were finally implemented, since I didn't see that banner talking about it before I left.

The timestamps on posts on mobile/android/firefox are off by about 43 minutes, as in a post I know was made around a minute ago will read "44 minutes ago". Switched over to brave to compare and everything is normal so the issue is definitely related to the android firefox browser.

I've been seeing intermittent 10 second delays on initial page load of a new thread and intermittently on reloads for the last little while. Not sure if it's a single backend as I finally caught one with devtools open.

And I lost the timing tab since I just reloaded. On reload it was just 2 seconds.

I got it again and tried Ctrl + F5 for a full refresh of the page to see if it did anything.

Strangely, Ctrl + F5ing got past the Kiwiflare error screen but refreshing or clicking anywhere to a new page kept bringing me back to Kiwiflare error page.
