Both nature and culture fucked them up bad. Natural resources are abundant, no need to plan ahead or hoard. Just breed like crazy, and eat everything you see. This leads to reproduction with zero selective pressure. Then there is the culture of the caste system. Freezing social mobility like that is just a terrible, terrible idea. And it doesn't help it encourages inbreeding. A good example is Indians in warfare. They maintained elephants long LONG after other regions that deployed elephants stopped.
