I think the house idea stems from Mald's controlling nature and allows him to justify less pay and more pressure on his jannies. If you can imagine someone in a situation where their employer pays for their housing and as soon as you're no longer an employee you must pay rent, it is a bad situation to be in. If you quit then you're not only out of a job but your expenses shoot up substantially and if you decide to look elsewhere for a job there's the added drama of having to move out.
I think you nailed it with the controlling nature, but I think it's an even darker version of that. I've learned a lot over the years about cult leaders and cult dynamics, and Mald sets off all kinds of alarm bells for me on that count. Gathering, concentrating, and isolating his "flock," both psychologically and physically, is Cult 101 and he has a strong predilection for doing just that, among other things. I'm not saying they're going to collectively not click the mana gem at a ferret farm in Guyana anytime soon, but I predict much more weird shit is to come.
