The scraps of armies you have left are not enough to conquer a nice bit of clay, so you stomp the pajeets and establish yourself there. Then you think of ways you can muster a functional army to conquer iran and have an actual nice place to lord over.
I get the distinct impression history didn't record what really happened to Alexander the Great. I think he wanted to push on into India and conquer it but his generals and armies were worn out and frankly were disgusted by India just like all civilized people are and ever will be.
