The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

It's finally happened, ok, maybe the 2nd time. One of my fleet of Pis has finally blown a Micro SD card. 5 years running in this system and maybe a 10 year old card total. Sandisk. It only went read-only so it was easy to copy it off. And it gets backed up too. It's an interesting failure all it does is print labels for packages every 3-12 months compared that some that get actual use. It's still a Pi 2b anyway.

Thank you @SCV & co for suggesting Artix. I got gifted an empty IdeaPad 320 so I had the chance to drive it around for a couple of weeks, including using it for a small local CTF, and I gotta say, I loved it. OpenRC has surprisingly great compatibility with black arch pentest tools as well, pretty much everything worked right out of the box. Didn't quite get to try XLibre but zen kernel made the old SATA SSD it had plenty snappy. Definitely would recommend.

I shouldn't angrypost either. Spent the day yelling at a vendor who kept having me look at shit unrelated to the problem I was having with their jank-ass software. But yeah, stay away from both GNOME and KDE, honestly. They're both bloated crap now. XFCE as mentioned is delightful, though I've grown fond of Cinnamon in Debian now. Does what I want, is light enough, and has useful widgets out of the box.

I use KDE Neon. I don't use Emby or Kodi, just a file browser. You need to compile some packages to get HDR support in mpv right now, but there are guides out there if you search.

If you already have an Emby server setup, LibreELEC and a Raspberry Pi 3 or greater will give you a 4K/HDR Kodi player and you can add the Emby plugins. I had this going for a while, but I just prefer a file browser over that fancy Netflix/Streaming interface.
 
I just need someone that opens applications in full screen by default and has a full screen start menu like Windows 8 thay can be navigated using a USB remote

This screams Kodi to me. But I haven't looked at HTPC stuff in a while since I set up a RaspberryPi to play old western movies on shuffle to keep my Alzheimer's riddled father entertained.

There are addons for Kodi that would let you use Emby and YouTube, based on some quick searches

This is pretty much LibreELEC. It's a minimal Linux distro that has just enough to boot up Kodi. It can do 4K and HDR on the Pi hardware, but it also supports standard Intel/AMD machines and some other embedded boards. You can load any standard Kodi plugins on it.
