It's hilarious how often liberals bash it as fascism pornography when Heinlein literally predicted where liberals were going in 1959.

It's also pretty telling that they don't understand Heinlein. If you read Stranger in a Strange Land you end up with a with the exploration of an extremely alien free love sort of experience. The book is as far from right leaning as I could possibly imagine.

The long and short of it is that Heinlein didn't fit into one political viewpoint. The man loved the medium of sci-fi to workshop how a future society might exist given different struggles. He used his books to explore his own sociological questions and opine on how people adapt to struggles, or a lack thereof.

On the last point, there's a planet in Troopers that is something of a paradise world. It never had a high degree of background radiation, and so the incidence of mutation (as well as cancers and deformities) was far less than other planets. It was a great spot to land and blow your paycheck on leave, but Rico waxes poetic about how the people there will inevitably be a genetic dead end. They won't encounter the hardship necessary for them to compete in a brutal universe. Everything that was born on that world down the line would be doomed to thrive only in that perfect little bubble it was suited to.

Heinlein was a deep thinker and his books ask their audience to look at their own world in a more curious fashion. Seriously, how many authors would take the time to even consider how a difficult environment expands the niche of the species that lives in it? It's great stuff. He holds up a mirror and asks "Now look at our world with these questions in mind!"

Probably the whole marriage thing in the book. It fits the world he's made but it would probably be off-putting for many casual readers. I would prefer it to be a miniseries so you can really see all the gambits play out.
