Games that push your PC to the limit

I've heard people mention that ARMA 3 is a bitch to run, maybe I'll give it a try.
ARMA attempts to simulate several hundred square kilometers of terrain, including air and sea, with whatever assets, physics, lighting, textures, AI, sound, and draw distance you would like to enable. it also attempts to accurately simulates ballistics of each projectile, and in a war simulation, that's a lot of projectiles that act independently. it is highly CPU dependent and requires a decently fast disk to load things, and enough memory to keep objects in place. however it's often the draw distance and fillrate of textures for your resolution that kills performance, dropping frames into the 30's or 40's. reasonable settings and appropriate hardware will net quite good performance with dips now and then for loading things, but the game itself is meant to be a simulator so when you crank up the settings again, you're back to square one.

Yeah. ArmAs performance "woes" are really just from idiots who set the draw distance to render at full detail for 50km.

On that note though, Total War games can get really chuggy if you throw enough armies at it. With the highest unit size option and a full 4v4 battle you can be looking at tens of thousands of soldiers having to be calculated for.

Yeah, Doom runs like a dream.

I don't know what the deal is with the Sims. It seems to run the same no matter how powerful your computer is. For some reason Sims 3 has a difficult time with newer video cards.

Jagged Alliance 2 runs like dogshit on a new computer and its almost 20 years old.

Grand Theft Auto 5 on max settings can stress a PC pretty nicely, especially if you download the 4K texture mod.

Seriously, why? I remember running that on a Pentium 2 with no major issues lol
I can handle GTA5 no problem

idk!!! lol. I think it's the fact that it is so old, it doesn't want to work "great" on modern computers. I've read that the 1.13 mod fixes this though, so I just gotta bite the bullet and start playing with it. Thing is, it changes the whole game around.

The PC version of Bayonetta just hit the shelves and the graphics are said to be remastered and better than ever. If you're into hack and slash you could stand to give it a try because it's an amazing game and I've never had anything quite like it

And in the same vein you could see about getting that Wii U emulator with a Bayonetta 2 rom

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a pretty heavy hitter on maximum settings, and graphically speaking, it shows. Its a gorgeous game, so since you've got a powerful PC, give it a go. You may find that you need to tinker with the settings a bit to get a good framerate though, as not even a 970 can handle it at max. Not without fps drops into the 40s, anyways

Fallout 4 with all settings cranked up to max is quite possible to play well on above average computers, I've done it, minus some minor slowdown in some of the badly optimized areas of the game, but you want to know how to really stress the crap out of your PC?

Remove all the optimization tricks Bethseda pulled to keep the FPS as high as possible, especially disable all the pre-culling LOD generation in both interiors and exteriors (I made a mod for this on NexusMods if you want to try this), and DON'T decrease your settings below the highest point. For bonus points, have the High Res DLC enabled and do not use any performance mods whatsoever.

All but the most bleeding edge computers will drop to their knees trying to keep a framerate that won't turn into a slideshow in some of the heaviest areas of the game.

Now that I've got my upgrades finished, I can run Deathwing maxed out. This first image is my original preset before upgrades. De0th of field is low, post processing is off, and the sharers are simple.

This image is with everything maxed out. Some xeno filth took a swipe at me while I was lining up the screenshot, which is why the perspective is a bit different.

For whatever strange reason, I can play Fallout 4 at an average of 100 fps on mid/high settings, however, Fallout New Vegas is still stuck between 50-70, strange actually. The saving grace for me would be that there are performance modifications that seem to help it.

I've built a PC that I'm very proud of and I'm looking for games that really test it.

I don't really give a shit about benchmarks or FPS I'm just looking for games that are known for being really taxing that my computer can run without noticeable slowdown. So far I've played Far Cry Primal and Hitman on maxed out settings and they've been smooth as butter. I'm currently downloading Grand Theft Auto 5 to give it a try.

Does anyone have any recommendations for games that will really punish your computer? Poorly optimized indie games don't count of course.

Crysis and Crysis 2 are still considered games that will push a system pretty hard.

I can play both Morrowind and Fallout New Vegas just fine on my laptop. Even Skyrim handles fine, though it's usually locked on medium setting when I do. What really chugs the system is Minecraft and Sims 3, and oh boy, do they turn my laptop into an inferno. I've had my machine nearly bite the big one several times because of how hot it got.
