Movie & TV Show Recommendations

I watched Der Todesking (1990) by Jörg Buttgereit.

Never watched a Buttgereit film before despite him being a pretty well-known horror/gore shlock director from my hometown, international audiences might now him from his very controversial film Nekromantik. This film, i imagine, is equally as controversial, as its main theme is suicide. There is no real plot and very scant dialogue, it's shot in an episodic fashion, one episode for each day of the week.
First off, no basically zero budget movie has the right to have a soundtrack this good, it's a real standout OST. Secondly, i ended up really liking this film, which i am still kind of surprised by. It got recommended to me as a bleak, depressing and disturbing film but instead of making me go "Oh, how sad/gross" it made me go "Wow, this was really interesting". Buttgereit's cinematographer does some real neat tricks with his camera work and there's two shots in it that really impressed me, especially taking the "no budget" thing into consideration. The acting is, of course, dogshit but it does not matter much.

The best episodes to me were Thursday, which is just a kind of explorative shot of a bridge in Bavaria which is completely without dialogue and instead is subtitled with the names, ages and occupations of people who supposedly jumped from it,

The second pictures' view is used in the movie in a great tracking shot

and Saturday, which starts of with a woman reading out loud from what i assume is a psychology textbook about what supposedly motivates a spree killer to commit crime. The scene shifts to her apartment where she straps on a harness and basically the grandfather of all GoPros and ends with a montage of her going on a rampage that is shot from her perspective where she kills people at a concert and gets shot herself in the end. That whole vignette made me go "No fucking way did Buttgereit come up with this shit in 1990!", it's the same exact shit modern spree killers like Tarrant or that Buffallo super market killer did. That one really blew me away because of its concept.

The episodes are also interspersed with a time lapse shot of a male corpse slowly decaying and while it's an obvious prop it's still a very well made effect.

While i watched this in a h265 encoded version i grabbed from 1337x the full film is also on YT and virtually looks the same quality-wise, thanks to it being shot on a shoestring budget. It's a quick watch, clocking in at just 74 minutes. It's more of an experimental film than pure horror or gore/splatter, despite it having some graphic scenes.

Finally I saw Das Boot after having it on my list for nearly 20 years.
What can I say about it that has not been already said?
It is one of the best movies ever and the best submarine movie ever.
The director, the acting, the music etc etc are all perfect.

I saw the director cut and I know there is a version that is cut up into a miniseries so if you want to check the movie, any version is good enough.
The music is so damn good when they try to get through Gibraltar and I was on the edge of my seat.
Move is almost 50 years old and still look great.

I saw The Conversation today.

Fantastic movie! Going in I only knew it's about a guy who's spying on people and that Gene Hackman is the lead.
But what started as being a spy thriller turned into a psycho thriller and I loved it. Really captures the paranoia that the trade of spying oozes.
The supporting cast is excellent as well.

Special shout-out to the score. It's eerie and unsettling and beautiful at the same time.

This is one of the best movies of all time. Gene Hackman was God in it. I think it's better than both Godfather movies.

And had John Cazale in one of his few roles, all of which were in movies that got Oscars or got CHEATED.

Also had Harrison Ford in it. Did you notice him? And Robert Duvall, somehow he didn't get a credit.

I saw Weapons. It's good until it's revealed what is causing it. It's "man in the walls" tier stupid and what's frustrating is they essentially tease a good explanation for it then go for the absolutely dumbest and lamest alternative.
It's a witch/vampire lady controlling all the people and kids to steal their life span. They routinely reference parasites throughout and it has fuckall to do with anything other than analogy. It could have been a parasitic infection, even one intentionally spread by the old lady, chemical weapons, or a ton of better explanations. But it's just idiotic voodoo shit.

If you want a good movie about people doing weird shit for abstract reasons watch Upstream Color, it's almost as confusing as Primer in a good way.

Naked gun was good. Not as good as the original but that's like comparing an S rank work to a solid B+. Got a lot of decent laughs and Liem was great. It was cool to see him acting opposite of Danny Huston because they had a similar dynamic played straight in Marlow.

Excellent. I believe I also saw the ~4 hour long Directors Cut. Outstanding movie.

I saw that a few months ago and it was great.

Hackman was 10/10 in it.

I quite enjoyed Weapons as I also quite enjoyed Barbarian.

Same director for both and I was pleasantly surprised that Alden Erinreich was in it. He was supposed bre younger Han Solo for many movies and got fucked by Disney.

As for your thoughts

The witch is basically a parasite. She arrived and the Mom and Dad could barley remember her and she keeps changing her story e.g. she goes from the Mom's aunt to the kids Aunt. She's also implied to be hundreds of years old and near the end she's getting ready to pack ho and leave and restart the process, with the kid in tow as a helper. She sucks the life force to get healthy and slightly younger and her magic is very "base". Nothing fancy, just blood, sticks, hair and objects form the targets

Oh and how the hell does the lead actress have the exact same hairstyle in every movie she's in? Some clause in her contract?

i checked out donnie darko and by god i dont get the hype. it didnt bore me or anything but the acting was middling at best and the plot and themeing were all over the place. i liked some of the cinematography and it id make me laugh though half the time i was laughing at the movie's expense. all in all its a 5/10 movie at best

There's a director cut of it, did you see that one? I've seen DD ages ago, so I can't even recall if I've seen that version. Supposedly it changes plenty of details.

The soundtrack is very nice and I listen to it every now and then.

So I just finished the 2nd episode of Alien Earth and I almost soy pogged.
Expectations were somewhat mid I'd say.

In Alien Earth, governments don't exist anymore and the world or human race is owned
by 3 big companies (2 of them are probably Jewish) - this is in 2120 (we'll be there in 20).

Weyland Yutani has crashed one of its ships into a stock ai-video city owned by a rival company.
Now the Alien - you know the Spiel.

You get to follow a new type of synthetic human being which is literally the star of the show
because, on the one hand, a crucial part of its creation legitimizes almost every stupid action
in every future Alien game/ movie/ series ever of those synthetics. It's like the establishing of the
Multiverse in Marvel, which legitimizes every stupid movie they've done since Endgame.

And on the other hand, the main actress is really good.
All actors sell themselves really well.

The practical effects are really good (including the alien), the CGI a mixed bag. Some shots are
so gory that they CGI passes (even though I'm sure they could and should've gone way more practical)
but others, such as the cities are downright bad.

Other than that, the production quality is really high. Soundtrack good and the gore is A+.

I intentionally only read the first and last paragraphs, I've heard other good things.

Watched blow out (1981) and it was great. Just a really fucking solid conspiracy thriller movie about a audio guy accidently recording a political murder. Definitely the best Travolta has ever acted, tired and manic in a good way before he just became a gaint ham. Even though John Lithgow has played plenty of great villains it still will always fuck with me to see George Henderson murder people. The only flaw is you have to put up with a lot of Nancy Allen being a ditzy idiot. Has some real pretty shots and just seeing all the 1980s audio and film equipment is reason enough to see it.

I saw The Conversation today
I'm probably going to watch that this week to finally complete my john cazale collection.

its a good scream.

Follow it up with Three Days of the Condor.

If you like the Conversation or Blow Out, check out Diva, a French movie about a young man who secretly records an opera singer (the titular Diva) that refuses to make albums. Then a random woman slips a cassette tape in his bag shortly before she is murdered. There are multiple parties looking for this kid and his tapes, but he doesn't know who is who or which tape they want. I wouldn't call it A+ maybe A- but it is pretty interesting with a some wonderful sequences and a handful odd characters that will stick in your memory.

The soundtrack is great, I had never even heard of the movie til I got the record for $1. Good investment.

I'll check it out. It looks like it has some good cinematography based on the stills on IMDB.

It was alright, I didn't hate it. Obviously it was never going to be as good as the original, because that's one of the best comedy films ever made. And the new one even felt like it had its heart in the right place, like the people who made it did really like the original and were genuinely trying with the new one.

But if it was going to be a true Zucker-style comedy, they really needed to up the density of jokes several times over. There was waaay too much dead time and scenes played straight for a film calling itself the Naked Gun. Even the less funny Naked Gun sequels had a new joke, visual gag, etc, literally every three seconds. This new one only ever gets close to that pace at a few parts.
