Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Turns out Pierre Gilhoudes, the mastermind behind Coktel vision classics such as the Goblins series or Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth (both great parts of my childhood) has his very own YouTube channel. Check out his animations if it's up your fancy, I think his style can be described as a charming mix between Tom Bunk and Gotlib:

So this upcoming France/Canadian show got leaked and 4Chan's /co/ is having a field day over the show's appearance and setting. And by that, I'm saying they think Tumblr will like it and how the setting makes no sense.

Yep, that looks like something Tumblr's gonna love to death. Even the Canadians have caught the Tumblr these days.

I recall when French-Canadian coproductions were as good as this:

Fuck, I still need to watch more of that show.

I'm sure it'll be a long time before we hear the end of that!
I get the feeling might be here to stay and may forever linger after shows like SU go off the air.

Then again, as mentioned earlier in the thread, some traits (like the Cal Arts teeth) have been around for decades with no sign of leaving, so who knows how long the full CA/Tumblr style may last.

There used to be episodes on both YouTube and Hulu, but they're not there any longer; which is a shame, since they had the whole series, including episodes that Nicktoons never wanted to air in the U.S.

If you want to know how long it'll last, long ago I figured out that cultural trends last six or seven years, tops, so by 2020 something new will have replaced it.

Wow... this was about as witty and engaging as an average episode of Peppa Pig.

MaXi? As in… Maxipads?

That animation is lazy, like dear God, did they not learn from Johnny Test? I'm not bothering checking the rest out, everything about that intro and opening sequence was bland and uninteresting. Besides, the way those two main characters fused together makes me think of:

I can't wait for the cries of "This is ableist to conjoined twins!" however--if it makes it that far.

I suppose those Canadian tax credits can only go so far. But yeah, nobody wants to do inbetweens anymore.

These two were the best!

Even better, they aren't always conjoined- It's just optional, like it's something they can just do because they feel like it.

And everyone's already commenting on the crappiness of the art and animation. Which I expected for two reasons- Flash/ToonBoom, especially with North American productions is almost always complete shit. And the company animating this show mostly worked within the realm of CGI before this, so they have little experience with actual 2D animation.

Their CGI's not that bad, it has a nice style, it's when it switched to MaXi that it was really jarring. That's some night-and-day right there.

I had a "Wait, they did Bionicle???" moment at the end until I realized that's probably more for the newer incarnation than it was for the 2000s movies. Either way, the Bionicle footage actually looked like their best.

I checked out the 4Chan boards about it and this info came up...

>The wild universe of MaXi propels us into the incredible adventures of Mara and Xilo, part-time conjoined twins living in a remarkable world where music, the environment, and playing intertwine. In this fantastic place, nature explodes in a world of lush greenery and develops into giant instrument-cities where the inhabitants, despite being a dizzying variety of mismatched beings, all follow the everpresent rhythm of planet Babelia.

>The twins’ family is exceedingly normal. There’s Pierre, their dad, a blind journalist; Petunia, their mom, a conformist puppet; and Oliver, their little brother, who has an uncanny perception of the world. Mara and Xilo also have animal totems: the octopus of eclectic music and the elephant of rock. Not to mention Jack, a second-hand, talking, male unicorn that doubles up as means of conveyance and professional Dreamworld guide!

Something tells me this series is trying too hard. Sure Gumball had a crazy setting, but at least the different art styles work together and there was some grounding.

Yeah... This really just feels like Amazing World of Gumball, if that show sucked royal ass (which it doesn't, IMHO; At all.). For me, that's because there's just no sense of that charm, wit, conviction, direction, nor meaning (which there is plenty of in Amazing World of Gumball, to be sure) that can be found here, compare to that.
When I can gauge that much just from just the very first episode alone, that's pretty telling of some unfortunate things, honestly.

I don't think CN (in the US) wouldn't really be missing out on anything to just ignore this. They should focus on hiring better artists to get some real variety for themselves, more than anything; definitely not falling back on Tumblr-level hackery like this (nor Social Justice Universe, either.).
