Death Battle - Analyzing weapons, armor, and skills on the Internet since 2010.

I haven't watched much of the other Death Battles since I've gotten over the gimmick for the most part but I had to see how this was going to go down. I felt some of Yugi's more interesting cards like Gandora or Turn Jump weren't utilized for some fun scenes, but it is what is and it went down pretty much the way I expected.

For a wimp, Yugi has some tough poses when he loses the jacketyugiohdeathbattle.png

Yugi's overall aresneal was barely utilized and it makes me realize just how much a mismatch this really was.

I don't think he used a single monster effect, they didn't even attempt Slifer's effect despite the fact Gengar was sent out after it was on the field.

I stop giving a fuck about Death Battle years ago. I usually might watch one when I hear the research is dogshit or a bunch retards are seething over it. I have to say though that this is one of the better researched ones and you can tell they tried thier fucking hardest to at least give Ash something. It's also pretty sad how these faggots have a better understanding of Atem/Yugi's relationship than almost 90% of the people who watched the show and think "Yugi is shit and he's carried by Atem".
I believe the idea is that they're doing Pokemon vs Yu Gi Oh as if they're finally settling an old playground argument.
Hasn't that been one of the most requested ones for years?

I thought it was well established the animation part of the episode isn’t what would go down between the two, and is just something to entertain folks, though I’m willing to bet someone on DeviantArt or DeathBattleFandom Wiki would write out everything in detail.

I think so? I’m not well versed in the versus community though I’m pretty sure that if Ash wasn’t going to face Yugi, he’d face Red, and the whole thing would be animated like a Pokemon battle and it’d be marketed as something like “Pokemon: the games vs the anime”.

Also, I’m not familiar with Yu Gi Oh, but was the Ash vs Yugi fight an accurate depiction of how Duel Monsters plays out? I just ask because DB made a point about how Pokemon battles and Duel Monsters games are completely different in their structure.

I guess it was more closer to Duelist Kingdom rules given the freestyle nature of the battle since there would be no reasonable way for him to get out all his heavy hitters normally, but there wasn't much they could do if they wanted to stick to each character's main theme. Otherwise Atem just hits Ash with a mindcrush and calls it a day

Strictly speaking in this situation Atem could just spam monsters because without the rules of Duel Monsters restricting him he just needs the Spiritual Energy to maintain it all, and I think Mind Crush requires him winning the shadow game first?

I always assumed that was more of an honor-bound thing. Like he could do it any time, but he gives his opponent a chance to get a victory and avoid the punishment. I can't even remember how many times he did a "Mind Crush" outside of Kaiba. He just did a bunch of the Punishment Game type stuff in the early manga.

Kinda wonder what the series would've lead towards if the Duel Monsters thing never got introduced and devoured the series.

Cancelation mostly, outside of Duel Monsters the chapter plots are really samey and boring.

>Yugi encounters bad person
>Bad person triggers Atem to come out and challenge him to a game that is thematically apropriate
>Bad person tries to cheat
>Cheating backfires
>Atem punishment games bad person

It was an okay cadence for the first few chapters, but having an actual framework to work off with Duel Monsters meant that there was an actual stable structure to work with instead of "I put a scorpion in a boot and we have to take turns taking coins and hoping it doesn't sting us. OH NOES the bad guy stabbed the boot and pissed off the scorpion!"

True, but I loosely remember the god cards taking up a lot of energy so I don't think he could maintain an army unless power of friendship came into play, but doesn't matter too much since Ash doesn't have an answer for busted Ancient Egyptian magic. As for the mindcrush, I always thought that was more of a honor thing since he even hit Panik with a penalty who wasn't in a Shadow Game. Kinda hard to tell since he only did it to jerks and stopped once Duelist Kingdom made him more heroic.

Also I won't lie, even though it wasn't popular, I miss Jigsaw Yugi. When I first went back to its origins, I enjoyed the game of the week gimmick that Takahashi had going on and was a little disappointed when it just became about the cards. I get why it happened but I think Takahashi could have worked out an ongoing plot, but admittedly just sticking to cards made it way easier to give it a focus

I mean you're not wrong, I just meant I wonder if Takahashi had any sort of plan as to where the series would go, or if it'd just be horror oneshots until it got canceled or he ran out of ideas.

A Q&A is up for Ash/Yugi. I'm surprised and happy that even Death Battle sees the "Cynthia's Garchomp is as strong as Palkia!" thing as false.

After their latest cast episode, they’ve added this addendum to Yang vs Tifa while discussing other infamous episodes the wider community disagrees with.

Other episodes they brought up in the cast were Broly vs Hulk, Ryu vs Jin, Bowser vs Ganondorf, Kirby vs Buu, Gaara vs Toph, Peach vs Zelda, Eggman vs Wily, and Bomberman vs Dig Dug

When you click that addendum…

And here’s that episode.
Yang vs Tifa: so bad it became the thumbnail to a fuckups episode.

Figured it was 100% over for Ash the moment Yugi had the God Cards available to him, especially with Holactie. The little nods of things like Greninja choking on the potential killing blow and Yugi pulling out a win with Magic Cylinder are nice touches though.

And yeah, Tifa got robbed in her fight 100%, the scaling of FF7 gets very fucking silly as seen with that recent Cloud vs Link rematch.

Isn't that the one where they tried to convince us that Cloud can take exploding suns to the face?

Something like that? I recall something about Supernova getting called illusion stuff back in the Sephiroth v Vergil fight (where that got used to decide on Vergil's loss) but it has been a considerable amount of time since I've seen that episode.
Which is a bit silly when it in the games deals fairly meagre damage in the original JP version, and can never kill in the non-JP versions (since it takes % of current HP).

Once you start getting past a certain point in terms of power (probably anything beyond country/maybe continent tier e.g. Esdeath) things rapidly devolve into nonsense and entertainment of "my character totally beats up your character", so I've never taken this shit seriously. You really shouldn't when powerscaletards seriously say Tucker Foley is 1-C tier.

It's simply impossible to buy shit like that. It's why I had suggested a thread to make fun of powerscalers could be fun to see with how much bullshit they'll spew.

I wonder how linked the power scaling and the vs debate/battle board communities are. Part of me feels they’re almost one and the same.
