One small mistake... I suppose if you look at it from the perspective of getting caught it was just one mistake, I wouldn't call it small though. But the truth is that Nick made thousands of mistakes, over a two year period and perhaps even longer while on his way to getting to that "one mistake".

I also don't understand how people think he's "getting better". He was forced to take drug tests at one point so he had to cut back on the hard shit and is therefore not as incoherently drunk and high, but he's clearly deteriorated since the arrest and has only given vague platitudes like "I made mistakes and it's my fault" while simultaneously saying "drugs and swinging are actually good and harmless".

This really recontextualizes the "I had to beg my parents to tell me they enjoyed sex with each other" line.

Maybe they weren't telling Nick about their normal sex life, maybe that was them finally admitting their degeneracy to Nick, who was jealous because they wanted him to live normally. Hence why Nick thinks swinging and drugs are normal. Mommy and daddy do it, so it must be fine and common.
