Warhammer 40k

I actually just bought it right as I read this. I needed a white to be able to paint over mistakes on my white primer and this one i heard was the best so.

It's a great paint with a high level of pigmentation, you can start with a primed black model and with 2 or 3 coats it will be well covered.

The Citadel white paint is shit in comparison, it's super chalky, separates very easily and the coverage is pretty bad.

It's one of the few paints I've been genuinely impressed with.

I'm doing the 2nd Space Sharks book and man, I just don't know with these guys. They've got all the set dressing of a really cool chapter but they're so goddamn boring. Tyberos really is the only standout thing about the chapter. And even then it's not like he's that special, since he's not the only Big Chungus marine running around. But I guess years of "HE WEARS DREADNOUGHT ARMOR" retardation over shadows this fact.

Best thing in the book was the Ashen Claws Chapter Master demanding their Power Claws back, only for Tyberos to say "1v1 me faggot" and punk them out. That was fun.
finishing up my first BA Sanguinary Guard and Terminator Captain. Still undecided if I want solid red terminators or to match the theme of the Captain by making them gold. Tried to do more Nmm on the SG's spear, not sure how well it turned out. Might keep picking at it when Ive got time. Either way pretty happy with my progress so far.

Lookin good pimp, keep going and have fun.
For a very split second I thought these were Minotaurs because all I saw were the pics. My shame is unfathomable.

Space Marine Captain done, Probably the best one of I've done so far. His cape has highlights of orange on the back that you can't see because of the shitty light in the room. Used a mix of speed paint and normal paint for him.

Lookin better and better bucko. Careful not to gas yourself out, a lot of new painters will get super into it until they get burnt out.

Yeah I'm finishing the kill team I got and taking a break. Though the game store near me has really good deals on used-minis. They had a full squad of preprimed Space Marine Infiltrators for 20 dollars. Some of them are pre-painted but a lot of them are just primed white, gray or black.

I found a terminator squad for 30 bucks too, didn't buy any of them but I'm glad I have the option.

Yep, like I said space marines can be had for dirt cheap because there's just so many of them included in so many bundles. It's not uncommon to find someone with 8,000 points of their primary army, 4,000 points of a secondary army, maybe started another project with 2,000 points of a third army, and probably has another 2,000 points of fucking space marines sitting around on sprues if they haven't tried to get rid of them. Every edition launch box, the Hachette magazines, people getting them as prizes at events, random friend handing things off because they've got piles of them for any number of the previously mentioned reasons.

Then you've also got miniswap, trolltrader, FLG's used store, local shops, ebay, etc.

Hell, I'll even give an example that's basically guaranteed to happen this year. The main 11th edition release box(like Leviathan, Indomitus, Dark Imperium, etc) is going to end up as half space marines and half something else(all of the rumors seem to be pointing at orks). As long as you don't care about the books and other bullshit in the box, you should be able to get the space marine half for half the cost of the box saving you a bunch of money on shit you didn't want/need, if not cheaper even though it'll be new models. It's the same way with stormcast in AoS. Doesn't have anything to do with the models or army being bad, it's just that over-saturated.

I'm gonna look into getting an airbrushed

I'm gonna look into getting an airbrushed
Already? Well, they're definitely useful. The Gaahleri GHAD-39 is like $45, goes on sale for around $35. Costs less than Iwata and Badger, works great, isn't a fiddly mess with the nozzle, and can do detail work as long as you've got enough trigger practice. Beyond that any decent compressor and a hose.

This guy has an excellent review, and isn't just spraying the back of spoons and saying its great(a lot of channels do this, or just use it for priming or base coats and don't actually discuss the thing in depth or show what it's capable of)

You can check out his other videos about airbrushes and painting, he's way beyond the typical mini painter when it comes to this stuff.

Im starting to get into 40k (Thank you Flashgitz) and I find some of the concepts and lore to be too disjointed or complicated to understand like the Marvel universe. Is there any particular canon route to follow? Are there any particular books I should read (I read, watch and play the games instead of the figure boardgame shit, sorry)? Right now I just know of the different chapters and couple of factions, I have no idea how the magic works or the Horus Heresy or history or stuff like the chaos sigils. I dont understand what the alien does to Titus and the other marines in the Secret level episode. I dont know what happens in the second half of Astartes or what the marines are there for, other than "kill the mutant and purge the heretic". I would like to know this stuff.

An airbrush is great for priming miniatures, zenithal highlighting and base coats. Its a great purchase if you feel like you need one already. I recommend looking at vince's videos about airbrushing since there is a lot of tricks to using one.

It is all very disjointed mostly because 40k is not a linear story, but more of a setting with some storylines. To get the gist of it i would recommend you get a PDF of any core rule book which even when ignoring the rules act as a great introduction to the setting and all its pieces.
For storylines there is the bigger one that is the horus heresy, which is the main storyline that explains how humanity got to the point they are currently, and the first 3 books act as a good self contained introduction to the heresy era shenanigans (Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames).

In all honesty you should get a pdf of the core rule book, read up on the setting and all the factions you are interested in and then look up book recommendations for what you are interested in, since most of the time there will be at least 1 or 2 good books you can read about.
Another thing i did a lot when i started getting into 40k was perusing 1d4chan (now rehosted at 1d6chan, which are not exactly canon but they show a lot of what makes the 40k universe awesome: being ridiculously epic and stupid and rawsome. While it is cool that people take 40k seriously, doing so takes a lot of the soul from the older era of warhammer, and it is always nice to have an idea of what the setting origins were.

no idea how the magic works
The collective unconscious of all life has a knock on effect of creating a plane of existence called the Warp. The Warp doesn't obey the laws of physics, does not exist at any point in time, and the things in it are not truly living, but they exist all the same. When an idea or emotion becomes resonant enough in realspace it becomes reflected in some way in the Warp, be it the Chaos gods or Faith in the emperor of mankind. Almost all the "magic" in 40k is warp based, as in the technology is designed to interface with the warp, or it is directed by living creatures who have a connection to it. Ships need warp travel tech because the imperium cannot feasibly run at scale without it. It is the reason why the Emperor's corpse is so important, he is the beacon by which those ships navigate through the warp.

Creatures with a connection to the warp are psykers. They are incredibly volatile, as both an asset and a liability. At any point a psyker could be a conduit for a warp spawn daemonic creature, or accidentally tear open a gate for them to pour through. Extensive mental conditioning is required in many cases. They are not well liked. Unspeakable numbers of them are rounded up every day and fed to the emperor to maintain his vegatative un-life .
Horus Heresy
Humanity had a really huge galactic empire, it fell apart because of a knockoff butlerian jihad (Dune) where the Ai's tried to wipe out humanity. This resulted in everyone being stranded from one another. The Emperor arose from a mad max style techno barbarian wasteland Earth in 29k and started putting the pieces back together. After he got Earth under control he made the space marines so that they could go out into space and unite humanity. He made big boss marines in tubes called Primarchs for each of the 20 legions but they got superman baby capsuled through the warp and sent to different planets. He started going out into space to unite humanity, all the while discovering the lost baby primarchs who grew up into Demigods. Horus is implied to be the first Primarch (Lunar Wolves) he found while out on his Great Crusade. Horus eventually graduates to the title of Warmaster (Renames his legion to the Sons of Horus) of all the legions so the Emperor can go back to earth and do other important things, he's a cool dude and everyone loves him. The first legion to fall to chaos (Word bearers) corrupts him. A warcrime is committed againsit many loyalist legions at Isstvan V. Lots of shit happens, primarchs die or transform into daemonic creatures, it leads to Chaos corrupted Horus traveling to Earth to kill the Emperor. Horus Fails but the Emperor is put on life support. The Sons of Horus retreat and rebrand as the Black Legion under Ezekiel Abaddon who was Horus's First Captain.
I dont understand what the alien does to Titus and the other marines in the Secret level episode
It was a Daemonic herald//mutated cultist leader of Tzeentch. The funky gray space was a representation of their minds and how easily they can be broken. One marine was bare and naked because he saw his wargear and equipment as greater than himself. Metaurus lived with the fear that he chose a boy who fell to chaos which brought shame and dishonor to the chapter, he could see that when he selected him as a child that he had that savagery which could easily go awry. Titus has no doubts and no regrets and was thus immune. You could also attribute it to his faith in the emperor which has persistently been shown protecting him through the games.
second half of Astartes
The ball? Could be old Ai going off the golden man they were constructing. Could be alien. Clearly something intelligent hijacking the inquisitorial psyker and the renegade humans. As described above nobody trusts psykers, if one looks like it's going nutts you just execute them before your head pops like a grape, or god knows what else.

I didn't get this and I saw so many commenting about Titus basically being bored without demons to slay, which is why his headspace displayed that. I didn't get the implications of the other two because there was no dialogue and the visuals were very vague.

Why were the imperium there in the first place and who are those two guys with the forcefields? I figure they are psykers but doesn't look like it. From a surface level I thought the imperium went there to secure the ball but couldn't and got sucked into it. What were the visions sent to the psyker about space Marines being burnt to a crisp?

Space marines were originally in legions. Chaos space marines are largely still legions, with random warbands of various makeup. Loyalist space marines got broken up into chapters and successor chapters. Ultramarines legion became the Ultramarines chapter, and there's 500+ successors for them. Imperial Fists have Black Templars, Crimson Fists, etc. as successor chapters.

You're looking for answers that don't, and likely won't ever exist as the sequel series will likely have nothing to do with it. The Astartes animation is a bunch of cool shit happening on screen, and that's about it.

Precursors to the chapters. The first legion to utilize them were the Word Bearers. After the Heresy the Ultramarine primarch decided anyone with an entire legion under their command couldn't be trusted so he commanded they be split into chapters. Some got to keep their original names, others had to rebrand. If a chapter heralds from a specific legion it means their gene seed matches that legion's primarch.

Yeah tbh the first guy could mean a lot of things, like his duty and job destroying his humanity//soul. Metaurus and Titus are much less ambiguous though since we have context.

The dude they plug into it has the markings of the inquisition, they are sort of like Feds. If you dont pay your taxes or if things aren't running like they should you get audited or worse. Whatever the thing was clearly took over an Imperium ship and crew which affected deadlines, which the inquisition must have taken notice of. Many chapters work for the inquisition even if they dont outright belong to them so it could be that the space marine were conscripted to help with this operation or already do this regularly.

The two masked guards I presume were psyker crewmen that the thing converted and began to alter. Like I said before it could be an old Ai, an alien, a warp entity, or maybe something Necron related which would imply it has nothing to do with the warp since they dont even utilize it in their tech. I never paid too much attention to the animation so can't really speculate on it's nuances.

I thought most of the games and movies are based off existing lore, in a more linear sense like star wars or marvel.
