DarksydePhil / TheyCallMeDSP / Phil Burnell - General Discussion

He actually thinks he's gonna win this, and that his word actually matters to Atlus or fans of their games. That "I am important and my word is king"

Phil is an almost universally untalented man, but he is deeply skilled at double-speak. He can ramble on about how important his opinion is and how he's such a big name in gaming, and in the very next sentence say "Do you really think they're going to take me to court over a few rinky dink videos with a few hundred views?"

He knows no one's really watching, but he also knows everyone is watching. It's an impressively hypocritical parallel.

(Cockroach Phil doesn't have the same ring as Grandpa Phil)

I still like "Ol' Man Burnell". There's an older Burnell man, but in his heart DSP is still just a crotchety lazy old guy.

I think everybody needs to relax a little on the 'this is the end of DSP,' hyperbole that is happening for the 10th time this year, as much laughter as I'd get if this was the case.

I completely agree, but it's easy to get swept up in, because eventually something is going to give. I mean, something already did. His real adult girlfriend abandoned him. Every day more and more parts are falling out of the broken down hooptie he calls a life, and someone he still keeps that piece of trash chugging along for a few more miles. But you can only fix an engine with shoelaces and gum so many times before it eventually catches on fire, and oh my god, what if it's finally caught on fire, guys?

I won't be too disappointed if he manages to somehow slap together a solution and keep pretending he's on top of the world, I'm not getting my hopes up. But even if he keeps it going for years, Phil's future is one bleak desolate place, and eventually something important is going to break. Might be his bank account, might be his brain, might even just be his grease-clogged heart. But something's going to fall out from under him in an irreparable way.

As you said, it already has. PandaLee was a toxic unlikable person but she was the closest thing to a soulmate Phil will ever have.

He literally fucked up so bad the perfect person for him couldn't stand him despite her obviously trying harder than I've ever seen anyone try before at salvaging their relationship.

Phil is going into his late 30s , is not fun to listen to, is not conventionally attractive, and never leaves the house. Do you think he's gonna ever find another partner, even a shitty one?

this is always how I saw Leanna. Annoying as fuck but she was literally Phil's soul mate.

BTW it seems to be a pattern for me lately to wake up (I am on east coast) and twitter is filled with DSP drama. Dude just can't go a week without fucking up.

This really isn't the first time DSP got into copyright problems with (hence the aforementioned Nintendo stuff where he films himself throwing the Wii U in the garbage about the copyright incident) so if DSP digs himself deeper into copyright problems it could get his account terminated.

Even then I think he could just make a new YouTube account or stream somewhere else unless I miss something.

Phil keeps it on the down low but I think youtube somehow is 90 percent of his income. Through some sort of weird strategy I'm pretty sure he makes 5k a month on youtube, perhaps from his older videos. Without youtube he would still have 2500 (twitch) and 1k (Patreon) which is fine but he has two mortgages so it might not be enough.

TEven then I think he could just make a new YouTube account or stream somewhere else unless I miss something.

Apparently a pretty significant chunk of his monthly finances comes from ads on his ridiculously huge backlog of shoddy play throughs. Even if he started over, a regular and stable chunk of his money would be gone, forcing him to rely more heavily on unpredictable donations. I wouldn't want to live with the stress of having no idea how much money I'd be making month to month, but there's a chance that's the next stage of his real adult life.

I understand reaction images/vids are frowned on, but I really think Mr. Bale can summarize everyone's reaction:

Working men and women around the world, including soldiers, get up every day no matter how they feel and perform tough and strenuous jobs without a single complaint. And even when they do grumble, they still get the job done. Mr. Honk Snort here is whining about allergies getting in the way of playing video games, but he's gonna tough through it for you! The viewer! Who should give him money right fucking now you ungrateful nudnik, ACK ACK ACK!

So pathetic.

Now to add to the conversation, he's been talking a lot about his "allergies" recently; have you noticed that? With Phil there has to be some kind of malady he can deflect to and pin his problems at when people criticize him. First it was Gout, then it was his "bad back" and now it's moved on to "allergies." He'll play it up as much as he can, even when nobody is buying it.

What's the point of suing him? How much money is Atlus really going to get out of this guy?
It wouldn't be about the money, it'd be about setting a precedence or sending a message. Since they've issued strikes to multiple YouTube folks, i would be interested to see if they are able to sue everyone at once.

Edit: I hope whoever was gonna make the TIHYDP has already dled all the videos. I think a copyright strike-quit might even be better than a ragequit.

The point is they said not to spoil their game by streaming certain parts of it online, and Phil did it anyway because he wanted to.

Sometimes it's not about how much money you spend or make this week, but about protecting your brand and being firm about the image you want to maintain for your company in the long run.

As much as I sort of hope this is the end of the cancer known as DSP I also don't think this is the end. Granted, he has almost no hope of winning against this strike. Maybe if he was likable and famous and not infamous he might be able to garner a bit of sympathy from the devs he could convince them to remove the strike with some negotiation and removal of the vids they don't like. The problem is as always that he's none of these things. He goes into full on "fight the power" mode every time something happens. He takes it as a personal attack and then nurses it for views and sympathy bits.

He might lose Curse over this, though. It really depends how much of a stickler they are for the rules and how much they get hounded by Phil's "detractors". Personally I want to see them drop him because the salt will fuel my schadenfreude. I have no doubt he'll recover and might even make a small windfall from extra Twitch tips because he has a small legion of idiots propping him up. Still this is yet another bit of self imposed drama that will destabilize his ability to keep his failing "business" afloat. I mean he survived jerkin' the gurkin' on air with kids watching and didn't get banned. He'll continue giving us kwality entertainment and that's all that really matters.

It's not the sudden stop it's the fall that's entertaining.

He should just quit. Seriously. He's prolonging this YouTube "career" for far too long. He should just sell the big house and find a real job (if that is still possible for him). If he had some honor or at least a shred of humanity in him he should try to redeem himself... Pay back John Rambo, Howard and the rest of the crew for Project 7 and do some good things for other people... If he'll refuse to change even slightly he's going to ruin his life completely.

When he streams, he has people throwing him fifty dollar plus tips from out of nowhere every couple of days and at this point I'd be pretty confident in saying he probably takes in more revenue through Twitch, than he does in Youtube advertising money. I highly doubt he's going to lose his Youtube channel or partnership over this but even if he did, he's going to be okay. It's pretty clear at this point that his finances are nowhere as bad as he claims and losing his channel would probably see an increase in Twitch and Patreon interaction anyway, so any news of the end of DSP are pretty much greatly exaggerated.

With that said, it's hilarious that, once again he gets a setback and proceeds to make things worse for himself. All he needed to do was contact Atlus and Youtube and calmly explain that he did his best to not breach any of their guidelines and apologise if whatever he did ended up breaking them anyway. Instead he has to release this panicked video calling out Atlus and discussing the ins and outs of every possible solution to the problem to the internet. Phil just does not comprehend that sometimes you have to be nice and humble to get what you want.

I wonder what Leanna thinks about yet another issue that could be 'about to end his serious adult business,' now she's out off the house

You say that, but his income from YT is one of his main pillars of income. He has three main pillars as we all know; Patreon, YT, and now Twitch. If just one of these pillars fall then he is fucked. He could probably survive "Paytrean" falling because he doesn't get quite as much from that. But YT and Twitch are the big ones.

I know the guy is a cockroach but if YT goes away then how in the fuck will he keep going? The Laveria CEO made it very clear that Phil is highly undesirable for an MCN. Or at least a legit MCN. Phil could go with a fly by night company but he could get fucked over when it comes to money or fucked again by copyright strikes.

Phil is not going to listen to common sense until he is absolutely forced to. To Phil, doing common sense things is like the ultimate sacrifice.

But see, the issue with that is that his life is already ruined as it is. There's really nowhere to go but down if Atlus successfully sues him and anyone else who violated their copyright. Even if he still continues his LP career (and that's more than likely even with the naysayers saying that it's the end).

And honestly, I'm amazed he managed to thrive for this long with all the potential copyright strikes he could have (or already has) gotten.

I'd be willing to bet Atlus was on the fence about any actions they were going to take against him until he sent them that email. That probably sealed their decision. I suspect they're gonna roast his fat ass.

I don't know... if this was Phil improperly using their IP, I could see them taking him to court (in fact, they'd be forced to do so). But over a Let's Play that is making pennies? Even if they wanted to open a precedent, there are probably better targets to go after. At the end of the day, Phil is completely irrelevant to anyone not into his gout antics.
