The family of 36-year-old Joseph Mendoza has filed a civil rights lawsuit tied to his death at Salinas Valley State Prison, accusing correctional officers of failing to intervene during a fatal attack.
Mendoza's wife, Celina Mendoza, and his parents, Zina Kumetat and Ismael Mendoza, joined their legal team at a news conference at the offices of Pointer & Buelna, Lawyers For The People in Oakland.
Attorneys Adanté Pointer, Bryan Harrison, and Stephen King addressed the April 8th death of Mendoza in a day room at the prison in Soledad in Monterey County.
According to the lawsuit, Mendoza was stabbed more than 170 times by two other inmates during an attack that lasted more than three minutes.
It says Mendoza was brutally and savagely attacked by inmates Edgar Frayre and Nicolas Young, who are affiliated with the Norteño prison gang.
The complaint says correctional officers did not intervene immediately to stop the killing.
The lawsuit, filed on December 1st, also says correctional staff did not use their weapons, which would have been appropriate, and follow protocol.
It also says they did not call for immediate backup or medical assistance.
Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the news conference, attorneys for the family said videos of Mendoza's killing have been shared online.
"To not only let someone whose life is in your hands get butchered so easily, but to then take cellphone video of the murder and share it as social media content should horrify any reasonable person," said attorney Bryan Harrison, of Harrison Kristopher. "This was raw, bloody slaughter and no one had the right to turn his murder into entertainment. It's perverse."
Kumetat said seeing the video online has made her grieving 20 times worse.
"They stripped him of his dignity by humiliating him and putting that video on all social media platforms," Kumetat said. "I'm still stuck on the day he died because of that video."
Mendoza was tried and convicted in Fresno County on July 29, 2009, to serve 22 years and 4 months for robbery (second strike) and attempted murder (second strike).
While incarcerated, he received an additional 4 years for possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner and battery on a non-prisoner (second strike), totaling 26 years and 4 months.
The complaint also claims Mendoza had previously raised concerns for his safety.
According to the lawsuit, in January 2025, prison staff confiscated contraband and controlled substances from Mendoza that were allegedly intended for a prison gang.
Afterward, attorneys say Mendoza requested to be moved to another part of the facility out of fear for his safety.
That request was denied.
"They didn't listen to him," said Mendoza's father, Ismael Mendoza. "There was a failure to act on his behalf."
The lawsuit further alleges prison staff informed other inmates about the confiscation, potentially increasing the danger Mendoza faced.
"Officers were present. They observed the incident while it happened and failed to timely and appropriately intervene," Harrison said. "This wasn't negligence. This was abandonment."

In a shocking incident from Vivekanand Colony turn located in Chowk police station area of Patna City in Bihar, a 70-year-old man was brutally murdered in broad daylight after an assailant allegedly beheaded him on a busy street.

Further videos show several more of the attackers walking past the victim, leaving him on the ground.
He was declared dead by traumatic brain injury on Saturday, with Lyon prosecutors adding that an investigation had been opened into suspected aggravated manslaughter.
Quentin, a mathematics student, had been providing security at a protest against the appearance of left-wing MEP Rima Hassan at the Lyon branch of Sciences Po university.
According to the right-wing Nemesis collective campaign group, Quentin was part of its security team.
The family's lawyer said Quentin was attacked by "organised and trained individuals, vastly superior in number and armed, some with their faces masked".
Nemesis were protesting against Ms Hassan - who alongside Greta Thunberg was part of the Gaza "Freedom Flotilla", a fleet of boats which sailed to the Middle East before being swiftly turned around by Israel.

According to Brigadier General William Quintero Salazar , commander of the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Police, two men arrived at a business . One of them entered the premises dressed in clothing associated with a communications company and, after intimidating the owner, stole some of his personal belongings.
According to witnesses, these people "demanded that the merchant hand over a gold chain" and, when he resisted the theft, they shot him.
According to Officer Quintero's account, the victim tried to resist the robbery, at which point the assailant shot him in the shoulder , causing a wound that later led to his death in a medical center.
"It is a very regrettable event ," said General Quintero Salazar, who noted that the institution immediately deployed all its operational and intelligence capabilities to clarify what happened.
Police have activated the homicide unit, the anti-robbery unit, intelligence personnel, and the Judicial Police. So far, they have reviewed approximately 40 security cameras in the area and along corridors leading to Girón and the farmers' market area , in order to determine the escape route of those responsible.
Although the alleged murderer entered the establishment wearing a helmet to conceal his identity , authorities reported that they were able to clearly capture his face in other recordings.

Extremely violent collision after a tow truck skids on the wet street & slams into a truck driver devastating the front end, killing him - Várzea Grande, Brazil (2026.02.12)
Valdeci Rodrigues dos Santos, 57, was driving the semi-trailer truck when the tow truck driver slipped on the wet road and crashed into his vehicle in Várzea Grande.
A 57-year-old man died after an accident involving a tow truck and a semi-trailer on BR-364 , in Várzea Grande , metropolitan region of Cuiabá, this Thursday (12). According to the Civil Police, the victim was identified as Valdeci Rodrigues dos Santos.
According to the police report, the accident occurred around 5:26 PM, at kilometer 457 of the highway, in a rural area of the municipality. At the scene, the tow truck lost control after skidding on the road , crossed into the oncoming lane, and struck the semi-trailer truck. The highway was wet at the time of the collision.
Security camera footage from the highway concessionaire captured the moment of the crash. The video shows a tow truck carrying a pickup truck on its platform losing control, veering into oncoming traffic, and hitting the rear of a semi-trailer truck traveling in the opposite direction. The impact caused the second vehicle to overturn and fall into a ravine beside the highway (watch above) .
According to the Civil Police, the tow truck driver was traveling from Várzea Grande to Jangada , 82 km from Cuiabá, at the time of the accident. A rescue team from the concessionaire that manages the road was at the scene and confirmed Valdeci's death. The tow truck driver was not injured.

According to the police report, the accident occurred around 5:26 PM, at kilometer 457 of the highway, in a rural area of the municipality. At the scene, the tow truck lost control after skidding on the road , crossed into the oncoming lane, and struck the semi-trailer truck. The highway was wet at the time of the collision.
Security camera footage from the highway concessionaire captured the moment of the crash. The video shows a tow truck carrying a pickup truck on its platform losing control, veering into oncoming traffic, and hitting the rear of a semi-trailer truck traveling in the opposite direction. At one point he approaches and attacks a victim with a blow to the neck region. After being hit, the young man still tried to move away from the group, but fell on the sidewalk a few metres later.
A friend of the young man remained involved in the fight and was also stabbed in the chest, on the left side. After the attacks, the criminal fled the scene.
Rescue workers were deployed and verified the death of the 20-year-old still at the scene. The second hit was rescued and taken to a health unit, where he received care.
