As stated above. You wanna start One Piece? Start with 1. That simple.
I'm not saying comics are inherently confusing, I learned a long time ago if I want to read a specific story, they tend to be collected in a graphic novel book. But acting like Manga is more confusing than western comics is just cope from mentally stunted men in their 40s and 50s mad at the world because there's another set of comics to read.

Right? It's just the five minutes at a time movies thing again. Superman has been "ongoing" since my granddad was a little boy and he died of old age like fifteen years ago. But it's manga that never ends...


The main problem Richard types seem to have with manga is that each book is actually about telling one long story as opposed to western comics where there basically is no overarching story and every story arc has to return the characters to the same pool mostly untouched at the end. They care more about seeing a cool adventure with the guy they like, and they wanna see the guy weekly in perpetuity.

Very few manga or anime ever go to 200 volumes or 500 episodes. If he's holding out something like One Piece or Dragonball Z as indicative of anime and manga he's a fucking idiot. More likely though, he's intentionally cherry picking to make this idiotic point.

They do overwork Mangaka sure, but im sure they tend to have more comfortable retirements compared to the average Comic Creator. No reason for the Heman creator needing a gofundme.

So maybe the weebs in the thread can help me figure this out, why the hell would the work life balance be better for women?

Like I get that certain genres probably have more demanding workloads, and that they may skew more to one sex than the other, like for example, stuff like One Piece or Pokemon are probably way more focused on grinding out as much as possible, versus some romcom that lasts for about a quarter of the time, but that seems like a genre issue, not a matter of the creator's sex.
 
The thing about one piece and alot of the long-running manga series is that you don't necessarily have to read 200 volumes to understand it or enjoy it. Most of the story arcs in One Piece in particular are self-contained enough that you can just kind of jump into it. Or at least that is what i personally did in terms of starting to read One Piece.
And saying that its a 500 chapter thing where you have to read every single chapter to get anything out of it is completely false. I mean its shonen manga. Does it make it better understanding the deep lore and the backstory? Yes. But its still really good even without that stuff.
The other thing I'll say is that as a reader, I had a far easier time jumping into the middle of One Piece than I had trying to get back into reading any modern marvel X-men book for the past 20 years.

I dunno what the hell he's trying to say, and he provides no evidence, but woman can and do create long running manga or work their asses off at multiple manga in their careers. Look at Rumiko Takahashi, FFS.

Ranma 1/2 ran for 9 years.
Inuyasha for 12.

Okay, One Piece has been going since '97, and that's longer, but I don't understand the argument that if you do a manga for a decade you have a better quality of life than somebody who's done one for three decades. Especially if the person doing the manga for a decade just starts up another manga series after finishing out the first one. Takahashi seemed to take quick break after Ranma finished, and then went right into Inuyasha.

Further proving he knows nothing about manga because the qol of mangakas is discussed frequently. There was a big resurgence of the conversation with Miura’s passing, but it’s been a focus every time a mangaka has to call for a hiatus for health reasons.

It’s not like the American comic industry treats its creators any better. How many of them are impoverished?
He made a video years ago about Tony Isabella (wtf at him transitioning btw??) waiting on his food stamps because he was starving. There’s constant discussions on creators dying broke while their characters make millions on the big screen.

One of the usual myths about manga presented in the west is that the creators are worked terribly hard and have no ability for any time off due to the publication schedules. And one of the things never talked about is that many series, especially very popular series, have uncredited assistants working on them.

Man vs. Woman in manga makes no real difference. Its a certain number of pages that have to be produced within a given time. Generally the sort of treatment creators receive is directly associated with the popularity of their work and the money their work is bringing in.

Sooner or later Richard will be making the direct argument that manga is bad because creators have to work too hard. That what true "artists" deserve is the crowdfunding model where people like Richard are paid several years in advance for their work and get to work on their terms rather than business terms. Having to publish on deadlines? To Richard (and comicsgate), that is totally insane. Making them publish on deadlines takes away all their "me" time.

Tony Isabella went Troon in 2025. Tony Isabella is also 74 years old and alot of the stories he tells about his poverty are questionable.
