and the whole event served to turn most anime fans against dubbing.
Which sucks because that’s how I like to watch anime.
Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum I guess.
Any rational person would abhor having pedo-porn shoved in their face.
I agree. What I meant was “idk how sexually explicit it was” all I know is that it was Ed x Roy fanart and Vic didn’t wanna sign it because he’s not a creep.

Enjoying a good dub can be tolerated. However, it becomes hard when you know who worked on it and what they did to a friend. Like, try watching Fullmetal Alchemist after all this. They ruined it for themselves. If you can avoid cringing knowing the real people behind the voices, then enjoy the localization while it lasts.

Even during the height of Weeb Wars, I was still watching ADV/Sentai/other dubs and could hear the usual suspects in them, and yet I noticed that quality was there. Someone or a couple of others during the 2000s/early-2010s cared about the quality being to the best of everyone's abilities. Monica Rial frankly is not a bad voice-actress, she could give a stellar performance under the right conditions (which was ADV). Sean Schemmel is actually pretty good in Berserk as Gaston. Chris Sabat honestly worked in a lot of the roles he cast himself in. Sonny Strait has actual range when allowed. Jamie Marchi was tolerable in some of her earlier roles. Chris Patton was lovely to listen to before he retired and wasted away. Greg Ayres has the right energy and passion for voice-acting that hearing him in these older dubs are a joy. Amanda Winn-Lee was a staple in old ADV for a reason (as long as she was tard-wrangled).

What happened near the turn of the decade was horrendous and blew the curtain away for the world to see. However, that doesn't fully diminish what they put out in the old days, and that needs to be preserved more than ever. People need to be able to figure out and see for themselves that once upon a time, before the rise of social media and endless politicization, localizers actually cared. It's just a real crying shame that the voice-actors were never humbled enough to recognize that and understood their limits.

Very true, most of us outside of America tolerated dubs, but once we saw this, we stuck to subs entirely.
Exactly. Those who sided with Vic knew who snaked him and were careful to try and avoid the dubs that had snakes in them.

No one is saying that any amongst them are not capable. What I said is that it is hard to listen to the dubs knowing that one of those guys is going to be betrayed by the others. Try watching a behind the scenes commentary with those people and Vic being friendly and close without your blood boiling. It is worth mentioning that the physical releases were getting backlash at the time as well due to lack of quality so there was extra incentive to not buy from them.

I used to like all those people but...

As I said before, I had this weird feeling that either Vic would win or the localization industry would fall. Well, watch what happened. A victory for Vic would have taught the industry that the world isn't what they think it is. Trump's defeat at the time sadly served to solidify their position. However, while they were enjoying the silence, they were starting to feel the noise. Whispers, discussion, YT videos and before they knew it, a match was lit. The subject reached mainstream and influencers had suddenly years worth of evidence to talk about. I still remember watching that Asmongold video where he looked up the dubs of the anime to see how woke they were. Do you think that many others (including the normies) didn't? What is even funnier is that JAPAN noticed too! First it was the changes in the manga that they forced Seven Seas to change back and then it was finally learning about the anime dubs as well. The Great Anime Noticing was upon us!

Of course, this was just the first punch that landed this issue to the mainstream discussion and Japan. The second punch was everyone's favorite games maker, Ubisoft. Assassin's Creed: Shadows, whose protagonist was a towering BLM billboard, brought the issue into Japan's mainstream as well. They had temples that shouldn't have been rendered, a protagonist that was cosplaying as a samurai and enough woke politics that it felt embarrassing to watch. Watch the drunk white guy with his equally drunk Japanese wife(?) talk shit about the trailers and pointing out every mistake. It was hilarious! In any case, that caused Japan to take media seriously in their adaptation and depiction. Oh and the Jello/Lovecom drama happened a bit before that time too.

All in all, the time of the woke localizers was always going to run out. It was slowly at first, in forums discussing things, but then it became a cascade. I don't think anything can be done to fix this. They could say that they overdid it with the woke shit and will move past it, they could get Vic to say he forgives them, they could try giving Vic roles too, they could do anything but I do not think that the fans are ready to forgive them. Ever. This betrayal struck too deep and when you combine it with the contempt towards the fans, opening that wallet becomes a Herculean task.

So sad. Hope it was worth it.

I can still watch them, it’s easier to do with anime since it’s a drawing speaking and not an actual human face.
I just wear my eyepatch and peg leg. Or I get physical media from 3rd party sources like eBay or whatever. They don’t see a cent of my money.

Or just…Watch it in your own language?
If I was German I’d be watching the German dub.
Exactly. Those who sided with Vic knew who snaked him and were careful to try and avoid the dubs that had snakes in them.
I honestly stopped watching anime for like two years after it. Even watching the Xenoverse 3 trailer and hearing Rial’s shit Bulma voice made me frown. If I get that game it will be from a used copy or yo ho ho.

Well, they need your money. That is why they are going down.

See? It destroyed good will.

It actually is funny. You know the whole Genshin VA Drama Boycott? One of the reasons the VAs weren't succesful there was because of people OUTSIDE America clammoring for them to shut the fuck up. It's not just American speaking English, you know? We don't want to bend to the whims of Americans shitting everything up.

I wish we got dubs in my language. It's usually only mainstream stuff like Spy X Family or Frieren that get dubs.

You cannot imagine how much non-Americans know about this shit. The woke backlash has been global.

Schemmel, Sabat, whoever, I can begrudgingly agree with those, but I personally never thought Rial was a good voice actress, even before she outed herself as a two-faced snake. Couldn't stand her as Bulma and while I thought Dorothy Elias-Fahn was a poor fit for Sayaka in DanganRonpa, I'd still take her over Rial (her and whoever was voicing Celestia in the anime, both just sucked).

Honestly, even before Weeb Wars kicked off, dub quality was going down, and I believe that's due to both the lack of new blood, and the new blood being terrible/too homogenous. Which is bizarre because there were FUNimation dubs with new blood that were promising (Blood Lad comes to mind), but they just... stagnated. The ADR directors likely didn't help, but the new voices also came from the same places, so there was just no variety in tone to tell them all apart.

This about S.A.V.E. or other stuff? The former were pretty lazy releases, for sure.

I can't think of any FUNimation dubs off the top of my head where I thought she was phenomenal, however, I did watch Sentai's dub of Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun and didn't realize she was the main lead for a couple of episodes. She just needed to be pushed into quality, and typically that happened under ADV/Sentai even though she was relegated to a supporting/side character. There's kind of a reason why fans used to praise the AIR dub back then because sounding moé in English is difficult, and Monica as Misuzu is considered a stand-out performance of how to do it. Even a rewatch a couple years ago wasn't painful despite hindsight being a bitch.

Doubt she'll ever pull off that voice again now, not after putting on all that weight and hitting menopause.

Exactly, when the fanbase complains about quality, you do not make yourself unsympathetic as well.

I remember the new DB physical releases getting negative reviews some time before. The boxes not looking good or something. The general consensus was that this was not the first time and a sign of things to come.

Dragon Ball has never had a good home media release in America. Some are better than others, but they all have some sort of quality control issue that prevents them from being worth purchasing.

According what I remember, that was worse than usual. Real half-assing if IIRC. I think the packaging was really bland and cheap? It was the ones with all the black. This was well before Weeb Wars but it goes to show that the opinion on Funimation was dropping evermore. This wasn't the wild west of the late 90s or something. We knew anime by then and learned to expect better.

The fact Rangerstop & pop con Atlanta recently re-invited Vic after having univited him years prior gives me hope, hope that other cons who've univited him in the past will finally wake up, see the worthless accusations against him for the BS nothingburgers they truly are, and re-invite him to own the former funimation now crunchyroll stans(bonus if they start actively monitoring announcements posts containing him and telling people complaining about him being invited to go pound sand, by deleting their posts).
