Tabletop Roleplaying Games (D&D, Pathfinder, CoC, ETC.)

An acquaintance got in touch with me a few weeks ago after not talking with him for quite a while. I used to play DnD with him. Turns out he trooned out...
The D&D pretending to be an elf ----> pretending to be a woman pipeline claims another victim.

Aye this be a harsh and unforgiving hobby for the weak of mind.

Do you happen to remember in which Dice Scum episore you were rambling for half an hour or so about Gladiator 2? It's one of the new-ish ones but I can't find it for the life of me.
I don't remember unfortunately, but if I had to guess it was probably RVMA. Either that or would be when we talked about the Teutoberg setting for Werewolf the Forsaken. Both sound about right for that tangent.

Might be the John Carter stream.

Lol you guys did Ruma? Yeah that sounds like there would be some Gladiator 2 talk in there.
Ah, think it is.

One of my PCs for years was an elf sorceress. I always thought you sucked as a player if you couldn't play any role.

For [nascent] troons it's less of a case of "roleplay" and more of a case of "this fucking thing is literally me," they can't distinguish themselves from the mask that they wear so it eats into their faces, or something.

Well they use the game table as a place to practice being gross in public. A normal male who's serious about playing a female may try flirting with someone to get information from him or avoid large gatherings of males who have been drinking. The troon will insist on using a hideous falsetto, talk about her periods, and make her "sapphic". Sometimes they'll even make the character a troon!

I played a lesbian knight in Pendragon for purely gameplay reasons. (It let me avoid childbirth rolls that have about 20% (iirc) chance of killing the mother.)

Degeneracy aside, have you ever seen an instance of incorporating a PC's periods into a campaign? It seems pretty bizarre given the rather large impact this could have on adventuring. A character's sex seems to be mostly/entirely an RP choice in the systems I've seen, so I guess it'd be homebrew?

I actually remember an RPG horror story or two about players with a menstrual kink going to lengths to make mechanics for it.

As a forever-DM, I can't understand this mindset. I can't even play anymore because I can't trust other GM's to be as thorough as me. Prep is my favorite part of the game, tied with listening to my players post-session.
It depends on what part of prep. Writing adventures, I like. Getting/making maps for VTT, or schedule wrangling, no thanks.

It's been talked to death, especially by OSR types, but the lack of respect for the DMs time is a massive problem. Sportball, concerts, even weekly poker games don't have the same flakeout rate as RPGs.

The worst part, even if I can't get people to go to the cinema, at least I can see the film alone. With TTRPGs, I don't get that option. Fuck, for years, an artist friend has wanted to do a Fighting Fantasy playthrough with them as the illustrator. Based on some yogscast episodes they love, but despite a group to do it (I volunteer to DM it since I have the books) it never happens.

The appropriate response is 'fuck no'.

I could see it in Ars Magica, since blood is a great arcane connection and getting someone's dirty laundry could be a bit easier than the usual methods of getting someone's blood like mind controlling mosquitos. But any target worth the effort of stealthily obtaining their blood has a longevity ritual and that opens up a huge argument about medieval medicine and Aristotle and whether longevity rituals stop periods.

Something I always thought was abit odd is that anything that Cyberpunk based will almost always have some Afro-Futurism in it as if a Techno- feudalistic future would be a net benefit to Africa rather than the reality of the nations of that continent being resource colonies of a corpo rather than a nation. Why do creators do it? Is it to make it something that isn't ignored or to inflate the importance of it ?

It would be racist not to.

Actually, Shadowrun managed to get out from under it, party by making Africa the worst hellhole on the planet. Either it's anarchic, filth-infested holes like Lagos/West Africa generally, or awakened nightmares like central Africa and Madagascar. The West Africa part of Cyberpirates really made me want to run a real Heart of Darkness, African neo-colonial mercenary game there, it is so delightfully bleak and darkest Africa. Also Asamando, DO NOT RESEARCH, some of the lore had made me want to hurl unironically.

I'd be careful about hinging campaign resources on an IRL artist. Artists are infamously flaky and I've seen a game that struggled for this exact reason. That the GM was trying to turn it into a podcast also didn't help things, but still.

Damn, I want to play in that game now. The low light of neon cyberware contrasting against the dimming sunset of a savannah amidst the ruins of bombed out refurbished vehicles and fly buzzing corpses with an uncanny quiet about gets the imagination going.

Then there's also Libya which was glassed by da joos and is now used to film a reality tv show called Desert Wars where literal armies go at each other for lulz.

To give people an idea how bad it is, here's a passage from the sourcebook which is written from an in-universe perspective. None of that faggoty Disney'd up plucky, quirky anti hero pirate bollocks here:

For those who do want to research how fucked up this shit is:

Also we're talking about a nation of flesh eating Ghouls here so they don't just chop them up/breed them for parts to sell, but for dinner.

We wuz cyberpirates and shiiiet
we wuz pirates and shit.PNG

My group doesn't play in Africa nearly as much as we do elsewhere but two of my absolute favourite all time campaigns happened there.

And the scary part is that the Sixth World actually improved life somewhat in Africa. Not much, though.

But yeah. Even in later supplements, there are NPC runner comments about how if you can't handle gunning down a twelve year old with an AK, don't go to Africa. Because child soldiers and Africa are like flies on shit.
