Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

well it is, its also every major company in america lol, all of them, even fucking GROCERY stores are now wrangled by this insanity.

my last one I worked at got bought out by a company who got bought out by a bigger company and all of them sold themselves to an even larger, Euro company, and they came down, said everything would be good, all the gladhanding smiling bullshit...

every location in my state and the state over got shut down, remodeled and turned into the Euro companies grocer, everyone fired, obviously, with "first in line" to apply to a company THAT DOESNT EVEN CUT MEAT (its all prepackaged) so people like me were shit out of luck.

but for a while it was all the shit above, they were very "Excited for new challenges" haha.
Let me guess: Aldi?

Fuck Aldi.

I'll say this in Marathon's defense, I don't hate the art style. I dislike it, I think it's really bad, but I can respect the attempt to make something distinctive and unique. Concord's art style, on the other hand, looks like it was intended to do nothing but own the chuds.
If the runners werent genderless mutt people and if the guns werent blocky I think more people would appreciate the art style. The things you see the most are just uggo.

Resetera shut down their CCU thread :story:

I remain in awe at how violently enthusiastic they are about having a discussion forum where you can't fucking talk about anything without breaking a rule somehow. Fucking amazing. This is literally doublespeak, classic 1984 style, "we are not shutting down discussion, but there's too many threads, but go create a new thread, also no 'us vs. them' shit because VE HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR DISSENT HERE!"

"Actual content is being posted here and we can't have that" is also a hilarious take for a so-called "forum" too.

I hardly register the racial or sexual qualities of the characters I've seen tbh. I'm far too distracted by the random polyhedra and shipping labels they've got plastered all over.

a big part of why the aesthetic doesn’t work is that it’s an impression of functional minimalism, not actual functional minimalism. It has the vague shape of it, but it doesn’t have the underlying mindset in its design.
A minimalist shapes the barrel of their gun via the reasoning of material and time costs, determining what will achieve their requirements with the absolute minimum amount of waste in all senses of the word. Marathon shapes the barrel of their gun via the reasoning of “minimalist looks blocky”.

someone went over this earlier, but part of the reason the sticker spam doesn’t work is that it’s not actually meaningful - there’s no true method to the madness. Part of the reason the plagiarism even happened in the first place is because none of the symbols the game uses mean anything, so outside material can be stapled in without looking out of place. Compare aliens and its famous semiotic standard:

Imagine if something like this existed in marathon. You uncover a snippet of lore about company A placing a bug in a refrigerated Xeno-biology lab in Map C. Then when you’re travelling Map C, you spot signs indicating a refrigerated Xeno-biology lab in one of the buildings - even though the building has been long-abandoned by that company. You can find out what they were studying if you investigate that lab and find the bug the first company left there - and all without anything other than your own curiosity.

This kind of creativity and immersive world design would require:

A. Competent devs and artists, not transsexuals and blacks.
B. The studio to actually give a fuck about the world they created, which they don’t. Its function is make them money and save their ass from being raped to death by Sony.

I love how intuitive those pictograms are, with a simple art style and easy color-coding, perfect for the immediate recognition of hazards, objects, and places of the sort necessary for hazardous environments.
I dunno, I think the self-destruct process and interface was about as intuitive as a completely manual roller-coaster-mounted root canal toolkit:

The instructions -- at a bare minimum -- were written by the Asshole Department:

The other day, as I was watching police bodycam footage and seeing some retard getting tased, I found myself thinking "Damn, Bungie stole gun designs from police!"... Tell me it ain't so!

I've played this in coop with my brother during playtest earlier this year, it's quite fun

I don't think this was lifted from Aliens or from the Semiotic Standard, I think it was lifted from Neotokyo.
Neotokyo was in the list of inspirations along with Ghost in the Shell that the art director published back last year, and it would explain why the symbols are applied so haphazardly without any thought to it, because the artists thought they were simply flourishes and not an actual thing.

Neotokyo is a much better game that is unfortunately getting left behind by the sands of time, it's really sad, their website has very good examples pictures of the game but it went under a few years ago and we only have archives nowadays. *sigh*

I think the cope is that the guns are 3d printed and therefore blocky. Maybe the idea is that the in game corporations are just too lazy and or incompetent to optimize the designs to use less resources. Kinda sounds familiar 🤔.
I find it hard to believe a corporation that had mastered producing fully functional robotic shells to an extent they were happy sending them out to get repeatedly destroyed would choose to cut corners on the weapons they were arming them with.

Although it would explain that stupid overheating mechanic that means players can't sprint forever. Must have skimped on the thermal paste like Microsoft.

From what I can gather, the shells aren't supposed to be minimalistic, they are supposed to be ornate, otherwise it doesn't make sense they have various garish colors with detailing, and aren't all the same or variations of a central design. The buildings aren't oblique because they are minimalist, they are simply blocky because that seems to be the fashion. If the weapons wanted to be minimalist, they would have exposed barrels and really tight tolerance builds with sheet metal pressing, they'd be grease guns and bougie favela shooters, but they are blocky because that's the fashion.
