Yeah, that's a part of why there was a distinction on /tg/ (before it became gay aids) between FLGS and LGS. A lot of game stores are run by absolute shithead scammers and they intentionally sell fleeced product. They know it's bad, and they know they're mostly selling to stupid kids, the parents of stupid kids, and stupid manchildren. What's funny is that had he tried to do this several years ago, he probably wouldn't be getting screwed as bad. So back in the day, there were a few ways to map booster boxes to get valuable cards. Some had very specific print-runs, such that you could know ahead of time which packs in which position in the box would have certain cards. That got done away with quickly, but then there was the issue that foil cards weighed a little differently from nonfoil. YuGiOh and Pokemon had a way worse issue with this, because they've got whole rarities that are always a certain style of foiling, so with a scale you could easily find them.

In today's magic, there's all these stupid foils and super-rare cards with specific foil styles that lead to the scale trick working again. You find packs that have very different weights and you sub them into the box for the heavier ones. In this way, there's not even evidence of tampering with the packs themselves, which are very hard to reseal. This does obviously damage the shrink-wrap around the box, which should be tight... and as detectivski's crack-honed eagle-eyes spied the other night, the boxes Jer is buying have that crinkled, ruffled texture that suggests they've all been heated so as to expand off of the box without tearing.

They're also what are called Collector Boxes, products aimed specifically at whales (and thus targeted more by scalpers). Cheapest I can find for the Secrets of Strixhaven boxes on Amazon is $480. I'm seeing a few on ebay for 470, 480, 420... these are probably the ones he's buying to save a buck.

I am glad to see that people are paying attention to the shrink wrap on the boxes. That was one of the things we used back in the day to see if the boxes had been tampered with. If the box didn't have it on it or it looked tampered with, we wouldn't buy them. Jer if he was an actual player for as long as he claims, he should know that is one of the easiest and best ways to tell if someone has been in it before you. My friends and I figured that out pretty much right off the bat going to shops without the benefit of the internet and someone telling us it which has me thinking it was longer ago than that for me. Christ, I am old.

Shops back in those days, most of them around me were run by those same type of people even back then. One of them we avoided is still in business today somehow and I don't know how it is, especially where cards and comics are what it sells, and comics aren't selling these days. People have to have figured out he's being shady with the booster packs.

I first started playing with Alpha, Beta and Unlimited, got out of it for a while and picked it up during revised and it became a game my friends and I played while drinking. When they started releasing special edition cards like foils, the first time they did it, some people could feel the difference in weight just by holding a pack. With one of the first editions they did that with, one of those friends was really good at it. He had something like an 80% hit rate with ones he specifically grabbed and thought had them in the booster pack. I also remember exactly what you are talking about with the boosters being in certain points in the stacks of them in a box. If memory serves, that was one of the reasons we started only buying boxes and when we'd go in together on them would randomize the boosters before splitting them up to make sure we all had a fair chance at the good packs.

With Hasbro/WotC trying to milk Magic for every penny it can, of course in its attempt to do so ends up creating the same problem over again decades later with the foils throwing off weights enough that people can use scales to find them. That doesn't surprise me at all. But, WotC also stated it wasn't going to reprint certain cards ever again and has done that too in the quest for more cash as well. So, it shouldn't surprise me and really doesn't. From what I understand, with the reprinting of cards, they even did it with ones that were considered way too powerful for lack of a better term from Alpha, Beta and/or Unlimited.

Collector boxes at that price better have something worth it in them. Is it just the packaging is "collector"?

Given how easy it theoretically should be for that video to be taken down, combined with the assumption that there is probably someone somewhere out there flagging Jer, how is this video still up? If you look for a common theme for all the videos about Jer being flagged down, it is true that some of them you can see how the depiction would meet the rule (such as the firearm - from a computer's perspective, it could easily not know the difference). But there are plenty that don't, such as the video game hand being 'nudity or sexual content'. I refuse to believe that google's programmatic detection is returning a positive result for a hand, not grasping a penis between it, but not returning a positive result for the term 'black fatigue'. That just doesn't make sense.

If even one person reported that video, and it was not automatically flagged, that implies it requires a number of reports > 1 to report a video for the programmatic content check to orchestrate, if the assumption that the check would flag 'black fatigue' is true. If that is true, then it implies coordinated, group harassment. That could be Jer in a secret discord, doing gay ops, or it could be another group taking advantage of the situation - which Jer hasn't exactly come out in defense of, despite his weasel-word attempts at appearing sympathetic.

If it only takes 1 report to trigger the automatic content detection check, and 'black fatigue' wasn't flagged for violation, then either that term is miraculously not part of their training data for their AI, or Jer has special protection.

I just can't rationally figure out a reason to not conclude that Jer isn't the biggest piece of shit in this scenario, and at this point, I'm fairly confident that's about as objective and charitable as I can be, especially compared with what I really think is happening, which is dramatically different than this section.

The packaging is as disposable as any of their other stuff, and they've several times had serious quality-control issues with the collector printruns rather than the regular ones.

So basically, here's how regular packs work these days: 14 cards, guaranteed 1 rare & 1 foil. Depending on the set, there can now be up to 4 rares in a pack. The prices on these rares are like-normal: chase cards can range from $10-30 or so. I should say, foils are now so ubiquitous that 'normal' foils generally tend to sell for less than non-foil versions, because people don't want to have to worry about curling.

In collector packs, you get 15 cards. 8-11 or so are always foil, and they are genuinely worthless: they are commons and uncommons from the set. In very rare instances, some uncommons can have their prices creep up to $2, and there are some full-art basic lands that can be worth a few bucks, so it's not literally nothing but it's never much. Then, there are the 4-7 rare-slot cards, which is why people buy them. These can be any rare from the main set, but also in special variations: alternate art, alternate foiling, borderless, etc. The value of these cards tracks with the value they have in the main. You can also get cards from supplemental products, which today are preconstructed commander decks with unique cards. Generally, these aren't worth much.

The final type you can get, which is super rare, are lottery win cards - cards that can be worth literal hundreds of dollars. Pull this Bloom Tender that looks like a shitty pokemon card? Easy $300. But of course, you'll note, even if you hit the jackpot here... that's still $150-200 short of the actual asking-price. And there's nothing stopping you from opening a pack with 4 $0.50 cards in it. Collector Booster packs... are gambling-addict bait, nothing more.

It is basically always a loss to open them, and their high price-point is driven by the fact that they're limited-run. What you're supposed to do is buy them and sit on them for several years, then flip them to whales. Whales like Jer. Jer is convinced that he's predestined for two things: incredible value from the pulls and incredible value from his catatonic pack-openings. I haven't sat through any of his content entirely, but from what I've seen these reseals are yielding him maybe $30 a box, if we're being generous. Even if he's getting them at crazy-low prices of $400, that's still enormous losses.

The cards he's hunting for in these ones are the japanese-art mystic archive cards. Some of them are worth a fuckton, but there's no guarantee at all that you get any of these cards in your collector box even if it ain't resealed. Short of these cards, the most-expensive card from the actual set itself (which will be the bulk of the rares)... is $30.

tl;dr: short of ungodly luck that is not possible with resealed packs, he is losing upwards of $350-400 a collector box.
