The Piagetian theory I hold explains it like this:

Everyone absorbs information as follows:

1. Start with existing schemas (will explain more below)

3. Try to fit it in (assimilation)

Number one is most important. Schemas are blueprints, things you already know. They are sort of like blueprints. And we are born with some basic proto-schemas by nature. One of them being children. We are pre-programmed by nature to wanting to protect them, to nurture our own, to not have sex with (this the part irl pedophiles don't have or lose), etc. Schemas can have connections to one another. Those connections can be a spectrum of strong or weak. For example, puppies usually trigger a relatively strong connection to our babies schema. That's why we have an innate desire to protect and care for them.

Anime viewers have already many schemas associated with characters, tropes, etc. And people who live and breath anime, so their anime-related schemas are already much well developed. My theory, is due to their familiarity with anime and its stylization, they don't strongly associate lolis with the human child schema, but with one or their anime character schemas. Any connection to real children is weak. This bypasses any instinct you'd have of not having sexual feelings towards them.

And then comes normies and actual pedophiles, who don't have such strong anime-schemas and create a stronger association between the anime drawing to the human-child schema instead. The normies then get repulsed, and the real pedos either get into the drawings as an outlet for their pedophilia or it doesn't do anything for them.

I mean, all that only works as long as it's a stylized cartoon. If you're into a realistic 3d model of children or a realistic AI renders, it's impossible that those don't trigger a strong connection to the human-child schema, meaning you're a clearly a pedo.
