I've often wondered, but never had a platform to ask...the pro-life religious wing-nuts preach ad nauseum that God and Jesus are the only entities who can decide if someone lives or dies, that God has given life etc...so how do they rectify that when a body is being kept alive solely by man-made scientific machinery? Surely if you're going to leave a life in the hands of God, you'd switch all machines off rather than artificial life-giving measures? A ventilation machine is the opposite of allowing God to do his thing, surely? This child would've been buried back in 2013 if they'd left it to God.

I find religious people very confusing.

I guess as long as the machine is supporting pro-life ideology it's God's will that it be kept on. I don't get it either. It's not God keeping the plug from being pulled.

Jahi is a fundie's dream. It's proof to them that braindead doesn't mean dead. Too many people think that they are experts on a subject because they know how to search on Google. They think doctors don't know anything because they saw "proof" of something else on some whackjob's blog.

Now I saw a comment on that Dr. Bastard site (pretty sure that was it) that about something being seriously wrong with Jahi's eyes. I'll have to keep looking for it since it wasn't in the entry I thought it was. But it stated that they were always covered in many pics due to this and that there weren't going to be any new pics of Jahi. Like others have said, I think it's more along the lines of the eyes making it very obvious that Jahi is dead rather than the eyes being rotted away or anything like that. I think all of the more recent pics were actually older, right? When people stop taking pics of their miracle brain dead family member you know something is off.

A former caregiver already commented on the menstrual story going around. She said no way and it was fake information. It stemmed from Jahi losing fecal waste through every orifice because of her insides slowly breaking down and liquefying. It was brownish in color and was seen on the bottom sheet where she was lying. If that family wants to believe something bad enough, they'll create something out of nothing. The caregiver also stated there were numerous no pest strips hanging and windows were always kept open due to the smell. this was in the early part of 2014. I can't even imagine what her body smells like now. Also? there is no way in HELL that family could or would get the death cert reversed. It won't happen./ the ONLY time a DC has been reversed is when a missing person who had been declared dead, suddenly shows up. Honestly, I'm sick of the McMath debacle and wish the scam fam would go away.

I had well developed breasts about a year before I started my period. She was also overweight so that would have added to the size of already developing breasts. Now we have no way of knowing. But Mama Nails acted as if it was Jahi's first period. But who knows. The mother is a scam artist. Although I don't doubt that part of it is due to dealing with guilt and the trauma of losing her child.

I looked up neuro breath because someone here mentioned it. According to this post it's due to enzymes in the brain breaking down and giving off a bad smell.

I was looking for anything on Neuro breath when I came across this thread from a few years ago. Most of what I read seemed to deal with just adequate oral care, but I believe there's something else going on with patients who have brain damage. This is what one of the posts said:
I asked a Neuro Sergeon about this bad breath. This terrible breath seems to even smell similar. I said that it was terrrible even after repeated episodes of oral care. We've tried everything. The best for decreasing the smell and also aids in the repair of oral trauma is a 11 ratio mixture of NS, Peroxide and Cepecol. Anyway this doctor explained the breath problem. I don't know if he was giving me a load of BS but, his story sounds plausable. He said that it was an enzyme given off by trauma or injury to the brain. This enzyme's effect was like the "fruity" breath given off by diabetics. Only this enzyme produces rancid breath. I however, haven't found data to back up his claims.

In my experience the odor coming off of neuro patients (those with brain damage extensive enough that they are comatose for several days, typically intubated, probably have SAH, IPH, shearing injuries, GCS typically 4-8, posturing, probably enduring a swelling phase so they're on hypertonic saline or mannitol, maybe have an EVD) smells the same across the board. It's the same smell regardless of any demographic and it tends to come on around day two or three and gets worse after a day or two. I hear that hunting dogs are trained to find their game/target based on a smell/odor given off by the injured target. Maybe the brain gives off some enzyme when it's injured. The other thing I've noticed, but haven't followed up on it, is that those with the smell tend to have poor prognosis. I would love to be able to follow up on my patients that get the smell, but don't end up dying (not a very large percentage) and see how their lifestyle progresses after the ICU. I know it's a very subjective assessment finding, but I feel like it could almost be used diagnostically. We could talk for hours about proper oral hygiene, but over the last seven years I haven't found that oral care, regardless of how vigorous and complete it is and regardless of the cocktail of cleansing agents and good smelling fluids we use, makes any difference at all. At best it only temporarily masks the smell. Thoughts?

Oral care does nothing to halt neuro breath because it's not an oral health problem. If there's flypaper up in Jahi's room then it's possible that this enzyme tells insects that there is a corpse in the area. I hope that Jahi is at least being cleaned properly to prevent an infestation. Even living patients can end up with maggots because their bedsores aren't properly cared for.

It looks like there's really no way to get rid of neuro breath. Nothing gets rid of the smell. It just masks it.

Now I've noticed something on the legs crossed pic.

What are those pink things in each of her hands? At first I only saw one and thought it was a stuffed toy. But there are two and they look like rolled up hand towels. It's abnormal for someone to sit up like that grasping a rolled towel in each hand. So it looks like the towels were used as a sort of mold to shape her hands so they'll look less limp. As you can see this pic doesn't show Jahi's head, which I doubt she's holding up at all. Is that cord from headphones or is it one of the machines? She has headphones on in one of the other pics.

Here's another pic where her hand is on something rolled up. Like a plaster cast or that stuff you can get at a pharmacy that's used for wrapping a limb that's sore. The sticky disposable stuff. Not the Ace bandages. Maybe that's what those hand towels are in the other one?

I think that without some kind of mold to shape them, Jahi's hands are fixed at a certain pose. Objects are being used by Mama Nails to pose Jahi's hands. Many other hand shots show her hands propped up on manicure accessories or towels. When they aren't you get this:

The hand looks different when a cylinder isn't beneath it. Try to make your hand bend like that. It is not very comfortable or easy. No child who is alive would have hands bent like that. Even the Hartley girl's contractures look more natural because it's something that's seen in living people with neurological problems. Jahi's feet are bent in a similar way.

I'm not an expert but that doesn't look normal to me. The whole way the foot is bent just looks like wrong. Not like a normal person would do if they had their foot hanging off of a bed rail. There's no way she'd be able to get up and walk like that. But Mama Nails seems to post like she's going to get up any minute.

I'm wondering if her nails are always painted or tipped with fakes because they are blue underneath from lack of oxygen.

Wanted to toss something into the mix.

There is no concrete proof that Jani was fed a hamburger just after she woke from surgery. No medical personnel witnessed Jahi being fed by her family after surgery and if there was any proof it happened it would have made it into at least one of the physicians statements declaring her brain dead.

In the days just after the case made national news, an anonymous poster on an online news site claimed that she knew for a fact that the family smuggled McDonalds in for Jahi to eat. That statement was offered with no way to verify it, but it got legs and became part of the accepted facts in this case. The statement occurred around January 1, 2014. By that time if Jani bled out due to eating solids, there would have been proof of it in the numerous examinations Jani received to prove she was brain dead. Traces of the burger would have been evident in the aspirated blood or would have been found in the stomach and not a single medical record supports this happening. I cannot find the original reference to the hamburger story but what the public began to learn about Jahi's family made it easy to believe they would be the sorts of assholes who would absolutely have to feed this child the moment she stirred after surgery. She went almost 15 hours without eating - I'm sure they felt she needed to get her strength back up lest she go into starvation mode and get fatter or some such bullshit.

There were also comments from other people who had been in the hospital that day who noted that Jahi's family was loud and obnoxious and that the ICU nurses bent over backwards to accommodate them, permitting too many people at one time to see her after surgery. They also reported that Jahi's family had been eating fast food in a family waiting room. It's believed that someone saw the references to a loud, aggressive clan eating hamburgers, read that Jahi was been given something to eat too soon after surgery (possibly a Popsicle) and either accidentally or deliberately added the hamburger into the story.

On another note, I wonder how much longer this can go on. I'm surprised Jahi looks as good as she does. Various experts stated that Jahi would experience extreme muscular contracture, her intestines would slough out, her brain would liquify and begin to seep out her nose and ears, as well as other disgusting and upsetting processes. Of course Nailah gives us the most sanitized version of Jahi in photographs. Perhaps she is a mass of rot and bed sores but it's hidden. Even if that is the case, Jahi's body is still holding up so much better than anticipated. I had hoped she would become so physically unstable that even Nailah would have been unable to continue on with the ruse. I really hope that her little heart finally stops beating and can't be shocked back into service.

The people who support keeping Jahi alive are some of the stupidest fucking people online. They all hate doctors and think their internet assembled knowledge of how the brain works is par with years of medical training. I remember one genius who begged Nailah to take Jahi to a mental health facility and subject her to ECT because that would start her brain back up like some sort of cerebral jumper cable. The Facebook for Jahi's case is overrun with some of the most frightening examples of how the ability to Google has made everyone more knowledgable than doctors. Essential oils get mentioned a lot, too. I'm surprised no one has tried to raise her out of her bed by laying on of hands.

Not a doctor, but kids are usually kept under as little anesthesia as possible for as short a time as possible. She might well have been in pain, especially having had basically the whole back of her throat and bones in her nose removed. Another perfectly good reason that you're not usually given anything more substantial than a Popsicle in that situation is post-op nausea, although drugs for that have gotten better. But a kid who's had, say, a nitrous oxide-halothane mix would be at risk to bring up a burger in spectacular fashion. Power level: I had a very minor surgery for an ear infection as a kid, and managed to bring up the actual Popsicle after having been given the aforementioned gas mix. Fortunately, puking fluids is less damaging to anything than bringing up solids would theoretically have been to someone who just had the whole nasopharynx remodeled.

I'm not familiar enough with the sort of surgery that Jahi had to say for certain how much pain she would have been in or if she would have even wanted a hamburger. She was observed asking for a popsicle, which would have made sense since it would be soothing after surgery, so she may have wanted at least that kind of food, and it was reported that the family had Jahi awake enough that she was laughing and trying to talk when they were supposed to try to keep her calm and quiet, so she would have been coherent enough to eat. Still, I tend to think that if she were to eat solid food so soon after such difficult surgery it would have been done to please or obey an adult telling her she must eat. But even in that scenario I have to imagine it would have been difficult for her and even her idiot grandmother with her low-level medical training would have been reluctant to try to encourage Jahi to eat solids so soon after surgery.

But...

When this first hit the news, people didn't understand that Jahi had undergone surgery far more intrusive than having her tonsils removed. The procedures she underwent were diminished in reports and headlines were initially along the lines of ASSHOLE DOCTORS KILL PERFECTLY HEALTHY TEEN AFTER ROUTINE DAY SURGERY. Many people still don't understand that Jahi had undergone some serious and invasive procedures. If Grandma Nails didn't understand that, and given her later actions it seems she probably had just enough information to be dangerous, perhaps she would have persuaded her granddaughter to eat to regain strength and Jahi, who by all accounts was a sweet, obedient child, would have tried to do as she was told.

So yeah, Jahi probably could have forced herself to to eat and try to swallow, and her family seems stupid enough to try to make her eat, but ultimately there's no proof.

For the record, I have no opinion whether it's true or not. Obese people do a lot around food that I don't understand; on the other hand, it's hard to imagine anybody wanting to eat anything mere hours after that kind of surgery.

If there is ever a trial the hospital documents will be released and we'll know for sure.

"Approximately a year ago, there was an article in the NY times which was highly critical of the hospital and under the comments section, a person, probably an employee, wrote a well written rebuttal which described very factually and in great detail what happened that day post operatively in the Peds ICU.

Because of the extent of the surgery, the pt was not allowed to talk and was given a white board for communication. The pt wrote "I'm hungry" The Grandmother brought in and fed her a hamburger. The pt bled immediately and the grandmother who is an LPN, was belligerent, used a Yankauer suction despite being told to not to do so and threatened the PICU nurse. The pt hemorrhaged and and code blue was called. It was a difficult prolonged and traumatic intubation.

This is a terrible tragedy for everyone involved. The reason the post in the NYT rings true is because the Grandmother has kept silent, knowing now that she is responsible the events of that day and the death of her granddaughter. It must be a terrible burden to carry that secret as well as to have to watch opportunistic family members trying to profit from the death of one's grandchild.

yes the things in her hands, and the look of her feet, are because of muscle atrophy. they're posing her hands to make them look less dead.

People who have been brain dead or had another very serious TBI, do have that smell and they usually end up dead. In a lot of the reports at the morgue the medical records will include nurse's notes, and those usually mention the oral smell. I'm tempted to actually try to start tallying up how many we get with that reported in the files.

Everything they're doing is just corpse preservation in order to cash in.

They DID take over the waiting room, brought in their own food, had the extended family camped out there, and trashed it.
PICU patients are allowed two visitors at one time, she had many. Then the family pulled the race card and threatened people if they complained.
They dragged the hospital Christmas tree out of the lobby, where it was set up for ALL patients to enjoy, and put it in her room.

Nails and uncle Omari had protests in front of the hospital, causing unnecessary stress to other families visiting their sick children.

That picture ain't right. If you look to the right handle, there's a key in the lock. Who locks up vitamins at home? And look at the bottles top left -- looks like three rows of the exact same pills in small, medium and large containers. There are other, similar examples. Who buys stuff like that? Who buys many small bottles of one kind of pill and not fewer, larger bottles?

I think that's a picture at a vitamin store. She was begging for money saying she was going to use vitamins to fix her daughter's brain. She was bragging that she was learning enough to be a brain expert.

Point is she has posted two photos claiming she is "buying vitamins" for Jahi that are obviously not anything she has purchased. She is taking photos of vitamins on store shelfs or in cabinets at a clinic. Never see any of these magical vitamins (which her dead daughter can't take anyway) anywhere near Jahi's corpse or bedroom.

Also, so classy bragging about stinking up the ICU with crawfish and posting #IDGAF - as if anyone needed confirmation mamma nails gave a fuck about anything but herself. It must of been a nightmare for other families suffering with loved ones in the hospital to have to deal with these selfish POS and their endless bullshit.

I doubt it. It's not as easy as a typical Lazarus sign (raising the arms). And Mama Nails is already infamous for putting Jahi in different positions..
