The Uncommon Case of Jahi McMath

[/SPOILER]

So this document has a slide that's about the transfer of Jahi's body. It says:
"On 01/05/14, Jahi’s family accepted responsibility for her body, which was moved to an undisclosed facility."

How on earth did they move her body from California to New Jersey? Plane? A plane ride is probably 5 or 6 hours. If they had responsibility, how did they get the equipment to keep her alive for that long? How did the hospital give (or was forced to give) their stuff to someone who was legally dead?

There's a lot of weird shit in this, guys.

Depends on the nurse, depends on the doctor, and depends on what they're talking about.

Nurses don't know better than doctors so much as they know different. A second-year student nurse is actually more likely than a qualified doctor to know how to perform a lot of practical procedures related to patient care simply because they've done them far more often. Doctors are seldom called upon to, for example, remove a cannula, a procedure student nurses perform repeatedly. They also spend far more time around individual patients than a doctor would and are better-placed to notice when something Just Doesn't Look Right, simply because they know the patient as a person rather better. And any junior doctor who thinks they can entirely ignore the observations and advice of a nurse with twenty years' experience simply because they're coming from a nurse is, quite frankly, an arrogant idiot.

Amy nurse who thinks she can diagnose like a doctor and order treatment like a doctor and, in many cases, lead in its delivery like a doctor is also an arrogant idiot, mind. And any LN who shows up as a visitor and starts waving a yankauer sucker around in an ITU setting because step aside you don't know nothing is a dangerous idiot at that.

I agree...but when it's THEIR hospital. When a former nurse walks in on a patient she doesn't have all the info on, in a hospital she doesn't even work in, and just says, "I'm a nurse, I know what I'm doing" and starts trying to treat or advise, ugh.

PL as way of explanation: my former nurse relative kept saying she wanted to sit in the ICU with our relative all day to make sure every single nurse and attendee used the hand gel before coming in, and kept telling us what to say to harass the hospital staff into giving more attention to our patient. Eventually if you piss off the real staff enough, they're going to avoid your room, which means WORSE care.

Obv not all nurses are like this, but an elderly former nurse who has that "gramma knows best" attitude combined with former experience and an emotional investment in one specific patient, can be a huge nightmare.

Also as a normal parent you wouldn't sneak in strictly forbidden foods to your kid on a strict medical diet would you?
Nope. But then I have been in hospital settings with family members that weren't able to eat like this, and I hard heartedly refused their pleas for McDonald's "my high cholesterol is turning my blood into a solid!" Menu Items.

I finally caught up on this thread tonight. So many terrible memories. Juju and her choking, Mama Nails and her Michael Kors. Omari, the crawfish and Nailah's constant painting of Jahi's nails. John Benton's hardcore white knighting.

I was searching for the press conference live stream footage that featured Dolan and his idiocy, as well as raw footage produced by Mama Nails. I remember at the time, watching it the day it was released, showing that ridiculous brain scan image like it meant something.
Whilst I haven't been able to find the entire live stream, Jahi's case is back in the news - specifically up on the Mercury News site, which was a hub for a lot of autistic comment chains staring the white knight John Benton, at the start of this saga.

Literal headline is "Jahi McMath is still brain dead" :story: Yes, she is.
Jahi McMath case back in the headlines featuring a few of the early era people in the comments - Acumenata, Suse, Glynis, brazen1 etc
Some John Benton classic white knighting.

I was also trying to find how they moved Jahi to New Jersey, because I remember at the time there was talk from perhaps Omari or just a family member, that they had a private ambulance transport her by road at least some of the way. It was paid for by either donations or a foundation.
This is all I can find about that about right now.

The teen left the hospital in an ambulance on Jan. 5, and her whereabouts were not made public until Wednesday. Dolan declined to confirm if Jahi is located there, as did a hospital spokesman. In a statement to this newspaper Wednesday evening, Dolan said Jahi’s condition has improved since leaving Oakland.

The spontaneous movement creeped me out, so I looked it up. Someone may have also mentioned this upthread. This source sez:
Some of the movements occurred spontaneously; others were triggered by touch. Examiners used tests designed to elicit motor movements, such as lifting the arms or legs or touching the palm of the hand.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) tests did not show any brain activity in any of the patients with movements.

@heathercho, thanks for looking into the transport thing. I wonder if it constitutes moving human remains across state lines or something.

John Benton...he's been banned from so many sites.
What is he claiming to be now? A baseball playing astronaut surgeon?

I think that they're supposed to exercise the limbs every day to keep that from happening, but I doubt that completely prevents it (astronauts in space for extended periods of time exercise every day for this exact reason and I'm pretty sure they go through atrophy until returning home). But as you can imagine people get tired of doing that every single day which speeds up the process. The Harley girls are the end result of extreme atrophy. Eventually Jahi is going to resemble them.

Will take my lates like a woman but wanted to chime in here. The Hartley Hooligans don't have muscle atrophy. I almost think it would be a relief if they did. They suffer from hypertonia, which means their muscles are in a state of extreme strain and rigidity almost almost all the time - tense every muscle in your body as hard as you can without relenting and throw in some seizure-related spasms every minute or so and that's what it's like in their bodies. Their muscles never relax and the continual contracting is what causes their limbs to draw inward, not muscle or strength loss from lack of activity. There is very little that can be done to help them because this is straight up neurological and the girls are so profoundly disabled that all therapy is useless, though Gwen keeps up with it for Claire.

Jahi's muscles definitely have atrophied due to lack of use. I bet if Lola or Claire have the capacity to feel pain they wish their muscles were as underused as Jahi's.

It's hard to keep all this horror show shit straight - had I not spent a stupid number of hours reading into the Hooligan's disease I too would have thought their bodies resembled those of extreme elderly people left to rot in nursing homes, deprived of exercise or movement. Nope - their muscles are so tensed all the time that their bodies have become twisted messes.

You know this is kinda like a reverse Norman Bates. Both keep their dead family members near them and kept insisting they were alive. Except it's the mom keeping her dead kid instead of vice versa. How long until she starts dressing up as her daughter and goes on a rampage?

About 2 minutes after someone in power tells her fucking quit this charade and pulls the plug as an act of mercy.

My guess is that they took her via air ambulance from another California facility to New Beginnings Community Center in NY, then was transferred to Saint Peter's University Hospital in NJ.

Chris Dolan, who represents the family, said in court papers that New Beginnings Center in Medford, N.Y., had agreed to take Jahi in, and that Medway Air Ambulance submitted a quote of or $27,950 to transport Jahi and an attending physician to the facility.

At the gala, Nailah Winkfield credited New Beginnings founder Scerri and the center — which earlier this year agreed to provide around-the-clock care for Jahi — for helping convince a California judge to sign an order authorizing the child’s release from the Oakland hospital.

Isn't New Beginnings the organization that solicited gift cards and back to school clothes after they moved to New Jersey, but didn't actually do anything beyond asking for donations or was that another organization? The organization I'm thinking of made it seem like the school clothes were for Jahi. It would be very interesting to find out what organization paid for the move and what company/organization actually transported the corpse from California to New Jersey.

I'll add this to the OP too. Once again I'm late, but will do.

Niggers don't believe in therapy.

Related to the education topic, but while I know you're joking this is actually a significant issue in the black community. In college, a fellow classmate I tutored talked about how in a lot of these ghetto-ass families (he himself came from one, one of those "first in his family to go to college" situations) consider mental illness a "white people" problem and refuse to acknowledge it exists, or try to push the Jesus treatment on them instead. In his case, he had clinical depression (tied to a degenerative vision ailment that was impacting his daily functioning) and his own mother refused to support him to the point of turning into a screeching harpy/physically violent bitch, doubly so when he expressed wishes to go to school and get a higher education (because even though this might make their living situation improve, it's still seen as wanting to be "white" or "you think you're better than us" mentality).

It doesn't surprise me that Jahi's family would fall into this same kind of mindset...but it's still very frustrating and depressing.
