I live in a state thats cold as balls in winter. I have to wear suits for college presentstions and i usually tend to dress semi formally from time to time (im in a private school) so yeah i need to buy 2 over coats yet not look autistic wearing them. Any thoughts? Also suggestions on hats to go with them? Again ones that dont look autistic. Also im slightly overwieght and heavy set in th face. not much but a little bit. so yeah any advice for any style concisous kiwis would be welcomed.

What, you afraid of the cold?boo hoo, widdle ol' spawny-wawny is afraid of a widdle cold. maybe after your big important meeting you can go back home and spoon with mommy to warm you up.

Pea coat.

Slightly less faggy than a trench coat, and less edgy.

I missed the don't look autistic part, but they don't look that autistic. The other alternatives, like dusters, look super autistic.

But really, you're letting some internet memes dictate how you dress?

Just don't get a trilby and a samurai sword umbrella, that brings you closer to Neckbeard Exodia

Eh i was debating buying a perdot and an actuall humphry bogart esque trench or a singe breasted with a golpher hat and perhaps a bowler or "shudders" an actual fedora "trilliby wearing jackasses make me question this". was also looking at a panama hat.

I'm pretty sure you're going to look autistic no matter what you wear because you sound very, very autistic.

I say get this and watch the little boy trim just pour into your life

I actually frequently wear an overcoat in winter, because I have to wear a suit for work. Here's the trick to not looking like an asshole:
-Wool. Always wool. It's classic, it works, and you don't need to fuck with it. Go for black or charcoal, you shouldn't be wearing anything else in winter anyways, and it doesn't clash with the dark suits you should be wearing in winter. You're going to see leather, it's going to look beautiful on the rack, and I promise you, you are not one of the 4 people on earth who can pull that look off.
-Skip the hat. It doesn't work and never will. If you could pull off the overcoat and hat thing, you wouldn't be asking and would probably be European. If you go with any kind of a fedora, you're going to look like a NEET. If you go with a skully, you're going to look like a Russian hitman. Just don't. I might recommend a nice cashmere scarf instead to keep warm, but keep it a solid (no patterns) and a primary color. I favor red, white, or grey.
-The secret here is simplicity. You want something you can pair easily with whatever you're wearing without too much thought, so avoid the temptation to go for anything too stylized. My personal preference is one like this:

You can also do the classic single breast three button, but avoid the super flared deal or the high double breast "mob boss" look, it won't look as fancy as you think it will.

Last bit of advice is that with all formal or business wear, but especially with coats, you will get what you pay for. Paying the extra for a high quality coat once will serve you a lot better than paying $150 every winter because it keeps going to shit.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

That's also seriously good advice. Buy a good overcoat, and it will serve you for years, or even a decade. Or more.

The whole point of a good overcoat is being able to tell the weather to go fuck itself.

A lot of people balk at the idea of paying $500 bucks for a single coat, but it is the last coat you will need. Cheap coats die fast, and they lose their shape, which will kill the professional look you're going for. Spend the money once, or spend twice that over time.

Sorry for double post, but forgot to mention:
If you have a broader frame, a single breast will serve you better than a double. Double breasted coats or suits will draw the eye to your midsection, which may not be what you're going for. The good news is that it's easier to find a really nice single breast for a decent price than a double, and it's a pretty classic look that's hard to mess up.

Thanks im gonna use my tape measure and get a couple used wool off of ebay. See the tbing is im in college therefore poor. I cant buy a canvas suit or coat atm. When i leave you bet your ass im buying a full canvas suit with coat but atm my glued lining suit and a decent overcoat will have to do. Altbough i was thinking one charcoal or black and one in a camel or tan to match my other suit with the kahki legs for our lovely springs when it rains and snows.
