Yep. it all went to shit when Homestuck went on hiatus and its fans started touching anime like SNK, Danganronpa, etc where the characters do have set races. This actually reminds of me of something I wanted to touch on.
I think part of the reason drawing random "diverse" headcanons has become popular is because of the cancer known as the Homestuck fandom. Basically, because so much of the character's appearances were up to interpretation in the comic, fan artists went hog-wild. However, when Homestuck fell out of favor, these artists migrated to other fandoms, and they brought their bizarre headcanon methodology with them. Thing is, you can't really do that with most IPs like you can with Homestuck, because Homestuck's visual vague-ness is not a common trait in popular media.
Anime characters, superheroes, cartoon characters, and so on have canon races, often intentionally. To throw all of that away because "muh headcanons" or social justice brownie points, especially in a work were the characters' traits are relevant to the narrative, is really disrespectful to the people who made it originally. It shows a profound lack of understanding of the IPs they claim to be fans of.
In short, we can thank the moron who wrote Homestuck and his insistence that the characters are "up to interpretation" for a lot of the headcanon BS that gets posted in this thread.
Isn't TAZ an even worse offender than Homestuck in this regard? It's a podcast so people feel free to imagine the characters however they want and a major chunk of the fanbase is SJW aligned people. There was controversy over one of the characters apparenrly not being fat even though his VA was, IIRC, because D&D characters of different races totally would look just like the VAs.
I can only imagine how bad the shitstorm will be over the graphic novel.
