but the real cowsplosion seems to be after 2007.

While arguably misleading, this cleverly stolen graph (from here) tells the tale:

That inflection point is right around '07. I think you're just looking at the growth of furry, and the rise of "nerd" and "internet" culture. The open culture of furry took to things like Tumblr like ducks to water, too. So there's a lot going on here.

All of that. And also, Furry in general *blew up* at about that point. Major population growth.

Furry really, though had its share of autism way, way back. The relative difficulty getting on the internet 20+ years ago, and the winnowing effect of time, have helped. Depending on what you mean by 'early'.
The Internet certainly did a lot in that regard. Otherwise it was just a passing interest of one or two people who had to work to make it happen.

There's a bunch of drama going on about a Halloween-themed convention called "Furpocalypse" and its theme this year, which is "Haunted Asylum". Because that's PROBLEMATIC.

It all really started when Twitter user sunookitsune got banned from the convention for apparently constantly harassing them about the theme.

The idea of a Halloween-themed convention using a spooky theme like "haunted mental institution" did not sit well with the social justice crowd, who deemed it offensive.

Keep in mind, this is the same fandom that REGULARLY fetishizes straight jackets, medical experimentation, hospitals, and the like. A quick search on FA finds 4,000+ results for the word "straitjacket". A herm character tied to a chair with electrodes strapped to their huge tits is HOT but the idea of a con theme being "haunted mental institution", well, that's just one step too far!

Y'know maybe the Deconstructionists (No not the snarky ass tv tropes kind) were on to something when they said that everything had an inherent contradiction.

I don't know how much of an effect this had, but 2007 was also when G4 aired an episode of Wired For Sex about the fetish.

The reason furries are so offended by the haunted asylum theme is because their families threatened to commit them to the psychiatric ward. It hits too close to home so they get all #triggered.
Rather they grew up if they could!
