Plagued Super Smash Bros. Community

They're lucky that controllers cost only about 15 dollars on Amazon.
Actually, it can be a lot more since most competitive moves need a higher quality official controller to use correctly, some players cherish their personal controllers so much that some companies sell custom buttons for them if you wear your own down.

Regarding the items/stages thing, the first few tournaments were actually played with all stages and items but the problem there was that it actually made the matches a lot longer because people play to win and camping is an effective strategy on many stages, the standardized ruleset now is specifically designed to be more exciting to watch. Just look at how things are without it:

Hoo boy. Controllers for competitive Melee are a terrifying rabbithole.

The short version is, certain gamecube controllers have faulty potentiometers on their analog sticks that make certain pro-level things easier to do so a controller with the weird pots is basically required for competitive.

The long version is this wall of text and :autism:.

Competitive smash scares me and I just wanna get drunk and throw bombs at other drunk people on hyrule castle.

Let's not forget the time that Armada threw a bitchfit over having to play Melee on a regular controller like the plebs and dropped out of a tournament as a result.

Shit like that goes beyond Sakurai stating that he didn't intend Smash to be played competitively. This is a community actively looking to play with very specific defective equipment for the so-called "optimal Melee experience". The Melee community is one of the worst in fighting games and I look forward to seeing more in this topic.

Armada actually drops out more than other top players, he got double disqualified at EGLX because he was sick and didn't feel like playing. Still doesn't beat the time Leffen quit because he got a stomachache from Taco Bell.

In terms of some real cow material, there's been some absolutely wild exaggerations from the Smash community after Plup beat Armada, particularly of Armada's ranking in the face of this.

Melee: the only 'sport' where cheating is not only allowed, but expected. And if you don't cheat, you're mocked as being a scrub.

It's like playing poker by asking everyone to place mirrors and whoever doesn't do it gets laughed at out of the tournament while the winner brought out a clearly marked deck, because they think it's fair that everyone got marked cards.

What? Cheating in pro Melee is very banned, this actually came up because a player was loading mods onto the console at locals to appear as though he was some low tier genius when really he was playing a very broken version of the character. Here's the thread about it.

So you're saying wavedashing is okay because it's a bug and at the same time a feature, and if you can't wavedash you're naturally inferior to the people who can?

I think they meant abusing quirks in the game like wavedashing.

It's not a bug though, the ability to airdodge into a direction was built into Melee as a recovery move, it's always been intended as a movement option even if they didn't expect dodging down to be so popular. By this logic using any move in a video game for a different purpose than was intended is cheating.

You're obviously not necessarily a bad player if you never learn to wavedash but if you're that good at the fundamental parts of the game it stands to reason that you'd learn the weird quirks and exploits to give you that extra edge, like how professional swimmers trim their body hair and wear specially designed swimwear to help them get that advantage over the competition.

Would you consider using the incredibly buggy Ice Climbers to be cheating though?

That's a big debate indeed but ultimately I think unless the meta becomes icies dominated then they're not broken enough to justify a ban. The wobble only works if you get grabbed with Popo AND Nana right next to you and it's not too hard to prevent that from happening, icies are still low top tier and it shows. Fly Amanita and Wobbles are inactive, ChuDat's been doing well this year but he still loses to to people like Kage and aMSa, and Nintendude got 4 stocked by Hax. The only player who really thinks they're uncompetitive is Mew2King but that's just because he's insanely bad at the matchup lol.

Do you happen to know where to find that compilation video that was floating around a few years back of people getting really, REALLY mad about getting wobbled in tournaments? I want to say it was right after it was discovered but my knowledge of comp smash only extends to the parts that involve internet mockery.
