Its "possible" he could be in pre-existing condition territory with the gout and his unhealthy lifestyle, but with an HMO, I know in my state, an HMO is prohibited from charging more for preexisting conditions. They can impose a delay in coverage in case of a preexisting condition, but an HMO cannot deny coverage (at least in my state). Things like gout, prediabetes, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and being 36 years old will not increase his premium. Preexisting conditions that usually increase premiums are things like heart conditions, previous stroke, cancer, HIV, genetic disorders... serious stuff like that. Things like diabetes and asthma rarely will increase the cost, if at all.My full-time girlfriend who lives with me.
Couldn't his healthcare plan got a premium because he became more of a fat slob, with pre-diabeetus and is getting older? I'm sure his risk of developing a chronic condition related to his sedentary lifestyle is increasing by the day.
(source, I was an auditor for a major insurance company as well as a medical coder/biller for a long time. got out of that field tho)
