Those other victims were POC, mentally and physically disabled people, and queer people. I thought it would fit in with the canon of the show easily, and honestly, I just love shoving queer characters down people's throats for a series. That’s really why this series exists!

Based on the character's Toyhou.se profile, the Ash character is 14, so seeing semi-NSFW art of her feels wrong (there might be some actual NSFW if you dig enough, idk).
Also, I can confirm that the character used to be 100% white. Not sure why it was changed, though..? It's interesting especially since the character started out as a self-insert and sort of still is one (asheds kins with Edward Elric, which can be seen if you go through his about), and how aspects of the Ash/Ed relationship can be seen as abusive on both sides.
