Law Upcoming vote on Net Neutrality laws - How many times do we need to strike this shit down?

FCC plans to vote to overturn U.S. net neutrality rules in December
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the Federal Communications Commission is set to unveil plans next week for a final vote to reverse a landmark 2015 net neutrality order barring the blocking or slowing of web content, two people briefed on the plans said.

In May, the FCC voted 2-1 to advance Republican FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan to withdraw the former Obama administration’s order reclassifying internet service providers as if they were utilities. Pai now plans to hold a final vote on the proposal at the FCC’s Dec. 14 meeting, the people said, and roll out details of the plans next week.

Pai asked in May for public comment on whether the FCC has authority or should keep any regulations limiting internet providers’ ability to block, throttle or offer “fast lanes” to some websites, known as “paid prioritization.” Several industry officials told Reuters they expect Pai to drop those specific legal requirements but retain some transparency requirements under the order.

An FCC spokesman declined to comment.

Internet providers including AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and Verizon Communications Inc say ending the rules could spark billions in additional broadband investment and eliminate the possibility a future administration could regulate internet pricing.

Critics say the move could harm consumers, small businesses and access to the internet.

In July, a group representing major technology firms including Alphabet Inc and Facebook Inc urged Pai to drop plans to rescind the rules.

Advocacy group Free Press said Wednesday “we’ll learn the gory details in the next few days, but we know that Pai intends to dismantle the basic protections that have fueled the internet’s growth.”

Pai, who argues the Obama order was unnecessary and harms jobs and investment, has not committed to retaining any rules, but said he favors an “open internet.” The proposal to reverse the Obama rules reclassifying internet service has drawn more than 22 million comments.

Pai is mounting an aggressive deregulatory agenda since being named by President Donald Trump to head the FCC.

On Thursday the FCC will vote on Pai’s proposal to eliminate the 42-year-old ban on cross-ownership of a newspaper and TV station in a major market. The proposal would make it easier for media companies to buy additional TV stations in the same market.

Pai is also expected to call for an initial vote in December to rescind rules that say one company may not own stations serving more than 39 percent of U.S. television households, two people briefed on the matter said.
Oh, and Comcast is already lobbying.

I'm so sick of this shit, seriously. The FCC is whoring out for Comcast and AT&T instead of ensuring that American citizens have equal access to the internet.

It's getting really hard to not get super depressed over this tbh. Nothing is gonna stop Pai from shitting up the internet. Basically, we're fucked up beyond all reason.
idk man. Life finds a way. I was depressed when I first heard the news, but I can't really stay that way for long. Something will happen to keep up the Status quo of Net Neutrality

It's not immediate and has many chances. Even should it go through I doubt it will be the end of everything and, as tehpope said, life will find a way.

On that note, here's an autism driven poem:

From shitting in our streets to shitting on our deets
From shitting in our streams to shitting on our dreams
From shitting in our riverbanks, to just shitting in our banks
He is Ajit Pai, Master Shitter

Rate that however you wish.

This is what's blowing my fucking mind. We know there's been extensive corporate lobbying on the part of cable companies. We know that the FCC- a government institution- is pushing the agenda of cable corporations. We know that Pai has been burying his head in the sand and ignoring the millions of voices that are telling him what a horrible thing he's pushing for, to the point where he honestly seems delusional. We know that Pai and other anti-net neutrality lawmakers have been ignoring the calls and letters and messages from citizens who don't support their agenda.

They are being so openly, blatantly corrupt I can't believe they're getting away with it.
Which makes one thing very clear to me – the amount of money cable companies have put into repealing Net Neutrality must be astronomical.

That being said, I want to remain optimistic because we have something anti Net Neutrality corporations don't, and that's the power of weaponized autism on our side.

I really hope both of you are right. Every time I think something will stop the repeal, I later find out Pai won’t change his mind. Makes me really fucking depressed.

They’re probably not gonna delay it but they are gonna let an investigation occur. We’re still fucked tbh.

I do hope that there are at least ways to get around the throttling
If a bunch of vital web pages start running open proxies the ISPs know they can't fight back. If they run dogshit slow on the sites that 99% of their customers want to use people will be pissed.
That's the whole scam. Pay for only what you use! Tons of customers would be pleased to find out that their bill went down 5 dollars by switching to the facebook only teir.

I'm not really worried in the short term. I'm worried more about the long term race to the bottom as ISPs with local monopolies rape their customers, including me.

I think it will take a while before they fuck with VPN users because anyone who bothers with a VPN is much more likely to be the kind of person who will fuck back hard if you fuck with their content. We also represent a minuscule percentage of users.

And there's always satellite. I'd care more if I played any online games where latency mattered at all, but I don't.

There doesn't seem to be any pluses from killing off net neutrality.
No there really are pluses. I expect they'll offer some extremely basic teirs that go along with the cable television.

The cable box dealie will have clients for your ISPs on demand television and streaming music offerings and a voip phone. The internet connection will have unlimited facebook, unlimited wal-mart.com (which your ISP will get paid for) and like a gig that you can use anywhere.

For a whole lot of people this will be all they ever need but it should be obvious how this is going to shit up the internet for the rest of us.

Well that will go against your everything else pool and then they'll throttle that connection when your gig is up. It'll get interesting when facebook gives that pleb teir dude a pop up asking if he wants to browse the internet proxied through facebook for free with their ads on the side.

He can't possibly think his ass will be protected if this goes down, does he? A billion ticking bombs robbed of the one thing that keeps them functioning and sane in this otherwise shitty world, and you somehow believe you, as the face of the movement that stole it from them, won't be the very first victim to come of it?
Unless he made some loophole that protects him (and only him, his family can go fuck themselves in his mind), Verizon's not going to discriminate. They'll turn on him and the other Republicans the first chance they get because Ajit clearly has no idea how corporations work. And while it may be :optimistic:, I doubt Trump or Ajit would tolerate the company spearheading the charge going after them like they would the public.

He can make as many loopholes and paper laws as he wants, that ain't gonna help him when people start tying up nooses. :story:

People with nothing to lose rarely fear the law.

Look at this lizard robot fuck. His mouth isn't even put on right. Do you seriously think this shambling golem monstrosity has anything in its head other than "fulfill mission"?

When Twitter-addicted lolcows storm his mansions, they'll probably find his family are all cardboard cutouts hiding boxes full of tasty human organs and spare face parts.

Are we sure this is a real dude and not some kind of animatronic puppet with a tape recorder in it's mouth?
