Respectful Correspondence Between Gens. Sherman And N. B. Forrest - Nathan Bedford Forrest. Look up the Fort Pillow Massacre and founding the Ku Klux Klan if you're unfamiliar. And yet Sherman would "Unhesitatingly accept" him into the US Army of 1873.
The one thing I can't find is a description of his meeting with both Grant and Lincoln in 1864 or 1865 where he was essentially ordered to enlist Negro troops. He noped out and made it stick. Possibly this was also codified in one of his general orders, but I'm not finding it, sadly.
And unlike (say) Lincoln he never walked back anything, at least from what I've seen.
Sorry for the link sperging, but this kind of thing always amuses me where I stumble across it.

Why am I not surprised that people that hold the opinion that other people who think the slightest bit differently than themselves deserve to be thrown in the gulag would look up to the man that razed and raped the South after his side had already won the war? I can't believe how socially stunted this person is, I wonder if they're actually employed or have ever had to deal with people on a regular basis. Complimenting somebody in an honest way is a great way to make them happy and unless you get creepy with it, nobody is going to think that it's weird in the least. Saying "Hey I love your shoes." or "Fresh new haircut, it looks good!" is a very nice thing to do to people, man or woman.
His perception that it's offensive probably comes from something that he experiences that warps his perception of the way people interact. I wonder if it comes from a place of jealousy. Much like @BillionBisonBucks said, the fact that his default state when seeing couples is anger is very telling to this as well.

They seem to assume that anyone who complements a woman is secretly trying to get into her china. Maybe that's because whenever they complement a woman, they're secretly hoping to get into her china. Projection is a hell of a drug.
