Is there any truth to "Yaya doesn't sew her own costumes"? There were rumors about Nigri not making her shit for years, even for really simple costumes. I always felt it was maybe partially true, but after cosplaying for years she'd probably get a lot better and gave her the benefit of the doubt, also I'm not aware of any evidence, but this was several years ago.
There's so many people in the community that give 110% into what they make and they still don't get half the attention as some chick in a bikini and a wig. It's maddening.
This soured me on the community, tbh. It's fucking bullshit that I have friends who love cosplay and pour their soul into it, AND ARE ATTRACTIVE, but don't show their tits off every single week in an underwear version of whatever character, and therefore don't have as big as a following. It's blatantly transparent. It's sickening. It's way worse if you're a guy. I think making certain kinds of armor and cosplay, like super sentai, is its own separate hobby, which it should be.
It wasn't like this when I started, at all. I used to like talking to my coworkers and normie friends about cosplay, now I don't even bring up liking it at all because I feel it's so associated with shitty people. I used to defend cosplay pretty hard when this first started happening. But I gave up, and am just apalled by the whole shitshow.
My least favorite are the people who wear bikini armor, and complain that they love the character and wanted to represent her but all female characters wear are skimpy clothes, or it's her most iconic outfit so they HAVE to wear it, and it's really the creator's fault for being sexist and forcing them to wear these sexy costumes. Or "I'll be harassed anyway, so it doesn't matter what I wear." If you love the character, and really don't want to show your tits, why not show what a fan you are by picking one of her less worn, interesting outfits? I could always tell who the most dedicated Sailor Moon cosplayers were because they were always coming up with these beautiful costumes based on the artbooks, that were still very recognizable as the character. There was a very wide range of them, from simple to truly elaborate. Even fucking Yoko from Gurren Lagann had alternate outfits that weren't as skimpy. Mysteriously, no one ever wears them.
If people were just like "yeah, I love showing my tits in costume cause I have a hot body" I COULD RESPECT THAT. But they don't, at all. They weasel around it with all the above excuses, and then complain constantly about being victims of misogyny.
Cosplay is just overly full of disingenuous thots. Oh, you're cosplaying Slave Elsa because you love Frozen and Star Wars and that's all you could think of? Go fuck yourself. I don't even blame Nigri for this like some people, it would have happened eventually, I guess.
