As most people have heard, the first tumblr convention, "Dashcon" was held.
It was absolutely horrible and included things like a ballpit you had to pay to get into, a BDSM panel that they let minors into, an empty hall with just chairs and a crowdfunded budget of 17,000 fucking dollars which was wasted due to poor budget allocation.

Someone who worked the panel says it's bullshit and they had three people checking IDs. Three people? Really? For a con where at least one guy just strutted in without paying and recorded some really awkward moments. If they had three people checking IDs but nobody actually checking for badges then wtf. Either outcome makes them look bad.

On one hand, you got no security to restrain illegal activity, nothing to prevent anything illegal and on the other hand, you have a understaffed group that cannot check the badges of each and every person. Not only did Dashcon fail to deliver anything save for the ballpit that made it complete joke but it also had minors slip into things that are definitely not for their age.

That's either total bullshit or they distributed their staff reeeeaaally poorly. I work security at a much, much larger convention (attendance figures in the quintuple digits), and we only ever have two people at most checking badges/IDs at normal panels. We only put more people to check at the huge events with multiple entrances and shit.

according to the hotel there was no additional fee. the main post that the staff made begging for donations is gone, as well as the 17,000 smackeroos.

They asked for 17 grand they got 20 grand, its telling that even the scammers underestimated just how much they could swindle of Tumblr users.

As someone who actually manages trade shows and conventions for a living this is hilarious. Wish I saw it earlier.

It seems to me these retards thought they simply contracted the convention center who would then do literally everything. For example the exhibit halls and rooms rented are empty. Usually you will get a company like http://www.capitalconventions.com/ who will provide all your basic stuff. How they managed to hold a convention without realizing this..... It seems they didn't have any registration system/people or even any fucking signage either.

Edit: actually it seems all they did was contract that gigantic event hall, a few others rooms and a pool. This is like example #1 why you should always hire a professional to run your retarded fandom "con"

According to The Other Side podcast, at least one guest peed themselves in the ball pit, and -- due to a very unsanitary orgy that happened somewhere along the line -- pubic lice also entered the ball pit picture.

A note about that ballpit photo? As someone who used to read Homestuck, I can confirm that the guy in the bottom right is cosplaying a character who is supposed to be a strawman portrayal of SJWs to make fun of how stupid they are.

I can understand wanting a meetup with people who shares the same interests but a convention dedicated to a site, any site, sounds really really pointless. The most 4chan ever had was a panel and that was it.

And I have to be perfectly honest, I'm so out of touch with Internet culture these days I still don't understand what an SJW is or why it's a recent phenomenon.

Pretty sure I know what the 17k was for. Most states require you to have Emergency personnel on site during all active hours for a convention. Looking at the schedule 17k sounds about right. Overall the costs would not be very high since they bought/hired almost nothing.

My guess is since all they did was contract the exhibit hall, a couple rooms and a ball pit, they had no idea and were told they had to pay by the hotels events coordination team (Usually the hotel deals with EMS) else the show would be closed down.
