He should have just launched the Kickstarter and hired actual programmers while popularity peaked ages ago. And gotten himself registered as an LLC while he's at it. But then he'd actually have to complete the game.
There's enough otaku out there that if he were to launch a Kickstarter stating the goal of hiring programmers to re-write and optimize the gamecode and he would stick purely to the designer and producer roles for the game, word of mouth would spread in no time to former fans and he would easily be funded.
But that would involve eating a huge amount of crow first, and it dosen't seem likely that this guy would EVER do it, even if it ment his dream game would finally be completed in a professional manner.
