I wonder how long the hiatus will be this time. In the long run, it probably won't affect her 'art career' or chances of getting hired somewhere, but her online presence has definitely taken a hit. Unless she REALLY changes up her artstyle, whatever she puts out next is sure to be mocked by pretty much everyone.

I think what she should do is take a long hiatus and focus on her art. Focus on anatomy, composition, color, even blank space and how it's utilized in some pieces. Take a long break and come back refreshed, artistically and emotionally. I'm saying this in the off chance she does read this thread every now and then. Everyone is angry at her, and I've seen this before with popular artists. What works best is to come back completely renewed, so to say. But she should apologize first, instead of playing the victim.

If she were to suddenly change her style she would definitely get laughed at more. That's why a hiatus longer than a month is necessary. Maybe then she'll come back a kinder, more understanding person. That's just me being very optimistic though.

It's not art school itself, it's the err of pretension among students and faculty. It's not even a Calarts problem; it's the nature of the beast. An unfortunate byproduct of encouraging creativity and free thought to the extent that art schools do is an extremely ostentatious avant-garde.

It's gotten to the point where things aren't regarded as avant-garde because they actually are, but because they fit the common stereotypes characterizing "avant-garde". Abstract expressionism isn't avant-garde, and it hasn't been since the seventies at the latest, but that doesn't stop pretentious idiots who think they know more about art than they actually do praising abstract expressionist copycats as "nuanced" and "daring". No, your nonsensical scribbles aren't cool or original anymore, they're just a lazy way of proving your "clout" as a "visionary".

Also, and this is just my opinion, but fuck abstract expressionism and all the pretension it spawned. Call me a philistine, but art should have some visible evidence of effort, god damn it. It's not impressive that you can do the same thing a chimp or a two-year-old child can just because you have a degree in it.

I thought most people went to CalArts for animation nowadays, and animation pushes things to be concise and simple so it's easier to animate, which is why a lot of the modern cartoons look so similar nowadays in terms of models and shapes.

I mean part of the culture of tumblr and modern universities may have help molded her art style to the degree it is, where everything is overexaggerated, and with how the fetishizes trans people with the whole Steve Rogers thing.

At this point I'm sure that 99% of the stuff we cover here can be traced back to the fact that the internet can supply anyone with enough enablers to drown out all else. Autistic fetishes, shitty art styles, horrible personalities or mental illnesses... when your friends, family, teachers or therapists tell you you're wrong, just pull out your phone and surround yourself with dozens of people who'll tell you what you want you hear but never what you need to hear.

I'm glad people have pointed out rory's bad art again but I doubt we'll be seeing any less of progressive blackface/transphobia on tumblr AKA go look through the sjw art and extremes thread
Also I see a lot of people blaiming calarts and her lazyness for her poor art but honestly I think it's just a mixture of lazyness and being horny for those transman tits! all of her new tranhusbandos all have the same dumbell body type reminds me of fetish artists who draw the same thing over and over with new hair/clothing but get worse at draawing

I think I can see why people blame the school, not only because of the "calarts style" meme(whether the meme is actually true or not, people still believe it), but because of how the prestige of the institution inflates her ego to the point where she doesn't try anymore and still think she's hot shit. It's the "I made it into Calarts, I'm the best of the best and perfect" mindset.
But you're right that laziness and trans tiddies are major factors as well.

Art school is never responsible for laziness. For all we know rory is making a C or B- average in her classes and barely staying afloat. If my shitty art school has a strict portfolio review then Calarts has to be selective. No way in hell will it pass every goddamn student that flops through classes and has a shitty work ethnic.

From my experience and knowledge of art schools, both good and shitty, blatant laziness like Rory’s is never rewarded and always scrutinized. She must get skewered by her professors a lot during class reviews.

After becoming another recent graduate of this thread, literally every single one of their Subject of Interest has their one defining fetish: (what they consider an)Attractive gets dominated by Ugly, short, (usually)brown, and fat.

There's nothing wrong with being a fetish artist, but cut the crap. It's obvious that popular children's media often times has the creator's kinks scattered about (Steven Universe absolutely being no exception), but there's clearly passion in the parts of the media where kink is absent. This is more than a kink for Rory, it's a fetish. It's clear Rory couldn't give half a rat's ass about any of the other animations they've done for class - but now that it's fetish centric, by golly are they going to try, and masturbate furiously all over insta with every 3 minutes of effort they put in.
