Stephen Hawking posting a new find that revolutionizes physics has roughly the same impact on a reader as some idiot posting that their research has proven that otherkin are real. People without an easy way to verify whether someone is spewing bullshit or not will just accept whatever crazy thing someone posts as long as it more or less lines up with their own worldview. You could fire up twitter and post that doctors have discovered that women actually have brain matter mixed in with the marrow in their bones, giving them roughly twice the neural capacity of men distributed throughout their bodies, and I absolutely guarantee you that too many people will buy it.

I don't think the whole fake clickbait news thing is dragging down humanity as much as just morons pulling things out of their asses in social media and other morons believing it.

Being a professional victim and finding faults where there are none has just gone way too far and can be linked to third wave feminism, leftism and general social justice thoughts. I think it's basically a short circuit of the same impulse as Dunbar's number, which is in essence the correlation between brain size and the number of people you can keep in your head. It was easier to notice before social media, for instance studies showed that people trusted television presenters over scientists when they were presenting the same data, even though that's obviously absurd. Or look at how a lot of people treated Jimmy Saville prior to learning he was a pedophile, even though he looked a grotesque puppet. Social media fucks that up even more - now you are being constantly bombarded with information from everywhere, all demanding your trust, and of course you are going to trust something that aligns with your worldview over the alternative. Add in the fact that the internet essentially says 'hey whatever fucked up thing you obsess over, here's a bunch of other people who will join in' and it's pretty much a downward spiral to the bottom.

It's really depressing and frustrating that there are so many people in the real world who do not understand that people who disagree with them actually believe the things they say.
