Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Double posting because new NodeJS stuff.

For those unfamiliar there's a section of NodeJS called the community-committee which is one of the primary areas for soft-skill, non-programmer SJWs to congregate and jerk off over Code of Conducts.

Housekeeping, pup (aka "Olivia Hugger") is now known as oe: https://github.com/nodejs/community-committee/pull/229 (https://archive.fo/Q6BAX)

Tiriel wants to stop letting new people join as observers since they're not subject to the same thought-policing as regular members. pup (now oe) agrees, stating that if you just let anyone join it becomes less "diverse": https://github.com/nodejs/community-committee/issues/224 (https://archive.fo/QcqnT)

Tiriel wants an immediate interim stoppage of new people joining to observe NodeJS community-committee meetings until they can figure out this "straight white male" problem. Thread is pretty long so check it out for yourself: https://github.com/nodejs/community-committee/issues/231 (https://archive.fo/xqwbp)
upload_2018-2-4_1-49-8.png

oe wants to hold a special 1 hour meeting to discuss putting in new membership guidelines, as soon as possible: https://github.com/nodejs/community-committee/issues/234 (https://archive.fo/wnRaI)

Recent meeting where they talk about their "explain inclusivity" project [timestamp 17:29]: https://github.com/nodejs/community-committee/issues/117 (https://archive.fo/WSijd)
Olivia Hugger sounds like a total troon, and suggests that they look at AyoJS "values". It came off a bit sneaky, as if she didn't want to remind everyone that she quit NodeJS and forked it into AyoJS because they weren't SJW enough to kick rvagg out for shitting on Code of Conducts.

Rachel White (aka ohhoe, rawhit, Tech Evangelist at Microsoft) volunteers to lead up the stale ticket. I don't recall hearing her name before so I took a look at her twitter account: https://twitter.com/ohhoe (https://archive.fo/JKrzU)

I think it's pretty obvious what she thinks inclusivity means.

Why the fuck does she need to have a wishlist when she's working at Microsoft and not on a seedy camgirl site?

Kill me now, I hate my life a little bit more everytime I read articles like https://lwn.net/Articles/745817/:

Even the title is a fucking kick to the face, "Too many lords, not enough stewards".

"First, the abuser must have power over the victim; in the kernel case, maintainers have a lot of power over their contributors, since their right to reject code is absolute. To get code into the upstream kernel, developers have to deal with the maintainer of the subsystem."

"There are some strong forces that uphold the status quo in the kernel, he said. One is the spectator sport nature of the kernel mailing list. When Torvalds blows up publicly, it is picked up by Reddit, Hacker News, and elsewhere. It is something of an "abusive performance art" that reinforces the personality cults and shows the power that maintainers wield."

"His talk title could be taken different ways; it could be seen as a reference to burn it all down and start over. But he sees things differently; it is a plea to the maintainers to please fix things before the revolution comes."

PLEASE STOP INFECTING EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH YOU

Edit: Have I become the salt?

FreeBSD was the OS I planned to run off to the day Linux userland becomes too bloated. Guess I can forget about that now.

Torvalds does need to be the benevolent dictator. It is necessary. If he wouldn't lay the hammer down occasionally, the Linux kernel would become a bloated, to-earlier-versions-incompatible mess inside of 0.5 seconds. All I've ever seen of him since the early 00s tells that he is a reasonable, practical person who doesn't sugar coat stuff. He also doesn't have the "holier than thou" attitude too many people in this industry have. He will actually go out of his way to explain things to people and is in fact very approachable. If he was wrong about something he also got no trouble admitting it. Thing is, he just isn't wrong that often. You see this with many people that are confident in their skillset. The people that are super defensive and need "safe spaces" regarding their work are usually that way because they know, deep down, that they are just not very good at what they do and have a fear of being found out.

Programming and software development needs the practical skills and knowledge about certain techniques but also talent, just like drawing or writing. You either can or you can't, it is not something you really can learn through any formalized training. To make a comparison to writing, almost every person in a civilized country learns how to read and write. Does that mean all those people are able to be good authors and writers? Of course it doesn't. It's the same with programming. Learning the practical tools of the trade isn't hard, and in fact is easier now than it ever was before. Applying them, that's what parts the Unity asset gamedev from the kernel hacker.

The thing is, in the last ~15 years programmers have been coddled by technological advancements and were constantly being told in colleges and universities that the machine will do the heavy lifting and that fast development is better than good development. This is coming to an end now, the "technological explosion" has been slowing down hard for years and in a few years people will need to actually *know* things again in order to advance the field. A lot of people will not be cut out for that kind of work and more and more people in the search for well-paid work also pour into this sector. Software Development will change a lot and I think a lot of those idiots are seeing the writing on the wall now and are trying to make the entire field about non-tangible soft-skills where themselves and their cronies will rule and actual talent won't matter.

As for the CoC issue with Geek Feminism, it actually goes all the way back to the time of the Ada Initiative. Not only were they pushing adoption of them complete with linking to Geek Feminism in an article talking about them, but they were involved in a lot of infamous drama, most notably cancelling someone's panel in 2013 over concerns of "rape triggers", the previously mentioned Code of Conduct policy pushing, allegations of honeytraps on men in the FOSS community, and after they folded, Eric S Raymond said that Linus Torvalds was targeted by them, and afterwards he issued a open warning about how often those people were popping up.

Lunduke put out a video. He's got this lame cover about "hugs" and completely not touching the whole feminism aspect at all, simply hyper focusing on this one thing as a bizarre way to attack this.

She was a central figure in the rvagg witch hunt. She also likes to tweet about #KillAllMen and your typical Antifa/ItsGoingDown/Punch Nazis stuff. The NodeJS people refused to enforce the CoC they were using to witchhunt someone who criticized the CoC on one of their own for very explicit stuff. They quietly shuffled her away and was brought on as some sort of community manager at the Rust foundation.

Both when it was brought up in the NodeJS project, and when she was hired at the Rust foundation the community organizers banned/heavily moderated any references to the #KillAllMen, or the long reddit thread on /r/node that came later.

Other than OpalGate, Ashley Williams might be the best poster child for CoC double standards. For details: https://kiwifarms.net/threads/nodejs-coc-salt-and-npm-genocide-afterparty.33793/

Do any of these ostensibly employed dickheads actually have any time for, oh, I don’t know, actual development work? How do they manage to find the time to engage in this level of stupendous faggotry? I’m super jealous.
There's actually a whole joke in the FOSS community (at least among the saner parts) about how they're the kinds of people who make a few edits to a readme file on Github and call themselves a programmer.

Do you think that’s why they waste their time with this shit? Compensatory behaviour to disguise their feelings of professional inadequacy?
I don’t consider myself a ‘real’ programmer, although at the moment I spend a lot of time designing a DSL, because I rely so heavily on other people’s work. I used to feel a bit inadequate, now I’m too busy arguing with code to give a fuck. Sounds like these guys could do with some actual work.
