The Final Fantasy Thread

My favorite FF has to be 9. I love the cast and the setting was pretty cool. Am I the only one who thought the CGI cut-scenes are pretty great? Another FF I have a soft spot for is X. I know the game gets a lot of mixed reactions online, but I always enjoyed the gameplay, the world itself, and a good part of the characters. That said, I can understand why people don't enjoy it as much.

My first experience was watching my older brothers play Final Fantasy on the NES, which I was only allowed to do under the condition that I bury my head in couch cushions and hum loudly whenever they wanted to talk about big kid stuff without the risk of me running my mouth. This was before I could read, of course, so it's not like I really knew what was going on with the pretty pictures on the screen, or with the really big fold out monster guide they had laid out (Nintendo Power, I think, but I'm not sure), but I was captivated all the same.

What ever happened to the Final Fantasy lolcows? Yaminoeyes has disappeared from the internet and I haven't heard any stories like FF7 House, the Sarah Saga etc. in a long time.

Is there some other franchise producing them? The Twihards etc. of newer franchises are silly but they never get to the imprisonment and amateur porn levels that the FF7 fans did.

Anyone here sick of Lightning?

She's a terrible character. No emotion, no serious arc, typical boring nigh-invincible mary sue.

But SE names XIII-3 Lightning Returns because they're so hell-bent on forcing people into this cult of personality around the character.

I haven't played XIII but I just have to ask: considering what I hear of Lightning, are there really any fans of this character? Really, what does SE even have to gain from having people play as this character?

Lightning is purely a character designed to market the game. The character herself doesn't go through any sort of arc throughout the game, nor does anything ever really penetrate her "action girl" exterior really. They have other characters in the cast to fill those niches.

Squeenix has long since abandoned effective storytelling for graphical hardware and set pieces. Nobody I know has very high hopes for 15 and I think it'll be just as nonsensical as 13.

Yes, she has quite a few. And no, I'm not bullshitting just because I enjoyed the game. I'd rather not have another pointless argument, so I won't even bother trying to explain. Anyone who so much as says something positive about XIII gets attacked in this thread.

If you don't like Lightning and think she's the worst thing ever, that's fine, I get it. I've seen her get so much hate it doesn't even faze me anymore.

To be honest, I have doubts with 15 as well. Due to all the years of development, it has the chance of the quality really suffering due to disagreements. I won't be surprised if there's a huge backslash on the game when it releases.

I know it seems like beating a dead horse at this point, but FF13 has the worst character names in the entire franchise, thats even counting the ridiculous names of the locations in FF9 (Gizamaluke, Cleyra... Stop trying so hard Square)

I was so disappointed that Sazh is pronounced with a regular 'z', I was hoping to finally have a legit way to write the truncation of "cas[ual]" :(

I say this very hesitantly but... I do... kinda. I mean, she was nowhere near as good a character as Celes or Rydia or Terra or Rosa, but I did warm up to her a bit in the original game, particularly with the section where it's just her and Hope.

Also, she punches Snow. That was fun times, right?

Then the dev team for Lightning Returns decided that she needed bigger boobies and I completely lost interest. :/

If they think that would of made her interesting, it wouldn't accomplish much since it would make people such as you lose interest. May as well ask: should the series be put down by now?

I don't really understand your perspective on FF9's naming. I still remember the names of FF9's cast (Zidane, Garnet, Steiner, Vivi, Eiko, Amarant, Quina, Brahne, Kuja, Beatrix... yeah). Cleyra was the city the Burmecians were from. Gizamaluke was the name of a boss and his area was called "Gizamaluke's Grotto". Then there were the cities like Lindblum and Alexandria and stuff. None of the names really confused me that much.

I mean if you hate these sort of fantasy names, Square has a history of doing this stuff. Like look at the names of the characters for 7. (Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, Barrett, Cid, Red XIII, Vincent, Yuffie). And locations. (Midgar, Nibelheim, Kalm, Junon, Gongaga etc.)

Most of the pattern for the naming of their characters and their environments prior to 13 is just that everyone at least sounds different from one another. With Final Fantasy 13 I was just extremely confused toward "l'cie" and "fal'cie" because they sound so similar to one another. And neither are ever properly explained so it made no sense. The setting Cocoon I didn't mind the name of, I minded more so that the setting is never properly explained outside the codex.

That and the setting contradicts itself. Spoony even pointed out in his review that Cocoon has potions despite it being a technologically advanced society with bullet proof trench coats that let you vaporize robots with your fists. And how the setting has stores and upgrade stations in the save points, so it obviously has easily traceable digital currency but for some reason this plot point doesn't affect how the main characters become wanted fugitives and murder soldiers regularly.

This is coming from one of the sequels to Final Fantasy 7 which explained exactly what Midgar was (A city built on a plate suspended by pillars, and people who live on the plate itself are richer than the ones who live under it) within the first 10-20 minutes of the game. And explained what Materia was just a little after that.

While I think FF13 isn't the worst game of all time, but there are better games out there. I liked the battle system, some of the characters(Sazh and Hope) and music, but it had major problems. To me, the biggest problem was the world of Cocoon. There's never a reason to care about it people or the locations due to the fact that we don't spend any time with them. I know that the main guys can't visit due of being a threat, but still they could have talked more about the place giving a feel to it. Not to mention, the weird setup of rushing into action without learning any motivations in the beginning really hurts the immersion Even on Gran Pulse, the world felt boring with the only side quest is hunting monsters.

So yeah, immersion and world building is my issue with FF13. Still going to try the sequels. Found out my brother has FF13-2 so I be playing that soon to find out more about the story becoming more nonsensical.

It's normal to be confused by all the terms in 13. I was too, initially. One thing they definitely should have done with the plot was show, not tell.

I can only assume they kept in potions because they're a Final Fantasy staple. Never really bothered me.

No, seriously, if you see this many flaws in 13, don't play the sequels. You won't get any enjoyment out of them if all you're going to expect is disappointment. And yes, it gets even more "nonsensical".
