I know it seems like beating a dead horse at this point, but FF13 has the worst character names in the entire franchise, thats even counting the ridiculous names of the locations in FF9 (Gizamaluke, Cleyra... Stop trying so hard Square)
I don't really understand your perspective on FF9's naming. I still remember the names of FF9's cast (Zidane, Garnet, Steiner, Vivi, Eiko, Amarant, Quina, Brahne, Kuja, Beatrix... yeah). Cleyra was the city the Burmecians were from. Gizamaluke was the name of a boss and his area was called "Gizamaluke's Grotto". Then there were the cities like Lindblum and Alexandria and stuff. None of the names really confused me that much.
I mean if you hate these sort of fantasy names, Square has a history of doing this stuff. Like look at the names of the characters for 7. (Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, Barrett, Cid, Red XIII, Vincent, Yuffie). And locations. (Midgar, Nibelheim, Kalm, Junon, Gongaga etc.)
Most of the pattern for the naming of their characters and their environments prior to 13 is just that everyone at least sounds different from one another. With Final Fantasy 13 I was just extremely confused toward "l'cie" and "fal'cie" because they sound so similar to one another. And neither are ever properly explained so it made no sense. The setting Cocoon I didn't mind the name of, I minded more so that the setting is never properly explained outside the codex.
That and the setting contradicts itself. Spoony even pointed out in his review that Cocoon has potions despite it being a technologically advanced society with bullet proof trench coats that let you vaporize robots with your fists. And how the setting has stores and upgrade stations in the save points, so it obviously has easily traceable digital currency but for some reason this plot point doesn't affect how the main characters become wanted fugitives and murder soldiers regularly.
This is coming from one of the sequels to Final Fantasy 7 which explained exactly what Midgar was (A city built on a plate suspended by pillars, and people who live on the plate itself are richer than the ones who live under it) within the first 10-20 minutes of the game. And explained what Materia was just a little after that.
