That's an excellent question. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's linked to the new sweethearts. They said they were in college and they were interested in certain subjects. Either they told Chris to study these subjects or he's doing it on his own so that they can have a pleasant conversation while drinking mochas at the mall food court. It would be an amusing script: they put pressure on Chris to become an intellectual, and finally dump him because he can't keep up with their interests.
